Job Details:
PURPOSE
The Operating Room (OR) Orderly is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient environment in the operating room. This role prepares the operating room for procedures, assists with patient transport, and supports the surgical team with non-medical tasks. The OR Orderly reports to the OR Charge Nurse and works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical technologists.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Room Preparation
  • Cleans and disinfects the operating room before and after procedures.
  • Sets up surgical equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures all necessary instruments and materials are available for the surgical team.

Patient Transport
  • Assists in transporting patients to and from the operating room.
  • Ensures patient safety and comfort during transport.
  • Communicates with nursing staff to coordinate patient movement.

Support During Procedures
  • Assists the surgical team with positioning patients.
  • Provides necessary supplies and equipment during procedures.
  • Maintains a sterile environment by following infection control protocols.

Equipment Management
  • Sterilizes and organizes surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance and checks on equipment.
  • Reports any equipment malfunctions or issues to the appropriate personnel.

Compliance and Safety
  • Adheres to all safety and regulatory standards.
  • Implements and follows safety protocols for handling hazardous materials.
  • Participates in safety and quality improvement initiatives.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Requires a High School Diploma/GED
  • At least 1 year(s) of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in an operating room or surgical environment.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's Degree in a related field
  • A least 2 year(s) of experience in an operating room or surgical environment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
