As a Mechanical Engineer at Cleveland-Cliffs, you will be an integral part of the autonomous work teams that make up the New Carlisle Works production and maintenance organizations. The individual at this level is a seasoned equipment technology professional who demonstrates a broad grasp of the technical and administrative aspects of equipment technology and maintenance engineering techniques and principles. Projects assigned are complex, involve multiple variables, and can be cross functional. Individuals in this role prepare effective communications across the organization and aid in problem resolution specific to assigned programs/projects.

The facility is in New Carlisle, Indiana and is a 24/7 operation that produces cold-rolled, hot-dipped galvanized and galvannealed, and electrogalvanized steel coils.
Summary of Responsibilities

  • Monitors and tracks line equipment availability and operating efficiency issues and creates "pareto" type analysis to identify key equipment problems/ failures.
  • Utilizes appropriate failure analysis techniques to determine root causes of equipment failures and initiates necessary corrective action to eliminate/reduce failures.
  • Manage technical aspects of assigned equipment projects.
  • Seek methods or procedures that safely improve maintenance practices which improve equipment performance and reduce costs.
  • Assists in the planning of equipment outages, downturn repairs, and the establishment of maintenance shops; sets priorities to ensure timely, efficient repair/replacement of equipment.
  • Work with Operations and Technical personnel to ensure that drawings are updated in keeping with equipment modifications; provides counsel for equipment redesign and secure information necessary for the performance of the position.
  • Investigate incidents and equipment failure and communicate results and corrective actions.
  • Cooperates with equipment suppliers and outside engineering to specify design requirements for new / modified equipment to improve operating performance and/or equipment reliability.
  • Coordinates the establishment of requirements, standards, and procedures for the equipment inspection; collaborates with departmental inspectors and with the non-destructive testing/predictive technologies group for the proper, timely inspection testing of equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, from four-year college or university is required, with at least two years of work-related experience.
  • Ability to effectively communicate across all levels or the organization.
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, advanced Excel skills, and Power Point)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Manufacturing industry experience with knowledge of OSHA safety requirements.
  • Experience in operations, maintenance, or technology in manufacturing.
  • Experience working in a union environment.
