Online Video Captioning focuses on creating synchronized captions for videos, ensuring accessibility and viewer engagement. While both roles require strong language skills and attention to detail, captioning emphasizes timing and synchronization, whereas transcription emphasizes accuracy and completeness of the text.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Online Video Captioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Online Video Captioner, you need excellent language proficiency, fast and accurate typing skills, and a keen attention to detail, often supported by prior experience in transcription or a related field. Familiarity with captioning software such as Rev, Amara, or CaptionMaker, and knowledge of captioning formats (like SRT or VTT) are typically required. Strong time management, the ability to follow style guidelines, and good listening skills help a captioner stand out. These skills ensure captions are accurate, timely, and accessible, which is crucial for audience comprehension and for meeting legal or accessibility standards.

What is online video captioning?

Online video captioning is the process of creating and adding text captions to videos that are distributed or streamed on the internet. Captioning makes video content accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and it can also aid understanding for viewers in noisy environments or who speak different languages. Captions typically include not just the spoken dialogue but also important non-speech elements like sound effects and speaker identification. Online video captioners usually work with specialized software to transcribe, synchronize, and format the captions according to platform or legal requirements.
