Job description

Job Summary: Responsible for maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical needs for the university.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Complete the scheduled work as assigned, within the guidelines established by the supervisor or lead position.
  • Maintain positive relationships and positive attitude with all facility services staff and university personnel including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Observe maintenance needs or requirements for the areas assigned and report the required to the supervisor or lead position.
  • Installs and monitors performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, adjustments, or replacement.
  • Repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances using appropriate tools and testing instruments.
  • Leads, guides, and/or trains other electricians in applicable procedures and techniques.
  • Operates and maintains medium voltage switchgear and controls; may repair and maintain motor control centers and programmable logic controls.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs primary distribution system malfunctions such as ground fault tracing and cable replacement.
  • Plans electrical primary system extensions to power secondary systems.
  • May perform work of lower level electricians.
  • Uses ladders and lifts to complete assigned task.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Reads, employs, and updates electrical panel schedules and building or system blueprints.
  • Performs other facility services maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Willingness to participate in the on call rotation and special event setup.

Qualifications/Skills Required:
  • Knowledge and observance of safety precautions
  • Knowledge of electricity and its fundamentals to include high and low voltage.
  • Knowledge of controls and control systems, lighting, and power wiring
  • Use and care of electrician's hand tools, meters, and equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and check layouts and make sketches.
  • Possess a current & valid driver license and insurable under the university's auto insurance carrier.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to prepare written reports and keep records.
  • Ability to perform trouble shooting on electrical systems, in HVAC equipment and refrigeration.
  • Individuals must be physically able to perform efficiently the duties of the position.
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Code, NFPA-70E, OSHA 10-30, and the National Electrical Safety Code.

Education and/or Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED; Trade or Vocational School
  • At least 5 year's experience in the electrical trade
  • Journeyman level or above

Work Environment:
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work in hot and cold weather conditions.
