How you'll contribute
An OB Technician who excels in this role: Under the supervision of an RN or designee, performs basic care activities and administrative support for the Labor and Delivery department. OB Technicians will manage patient scheduling and charts
Essential Function
  • Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including but not limited to monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to care team, physician, patient, and family.
  • Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including but not limited to bathing, grooming, nutrition, and ambulation.
  • Reports patient care needs accurately and concisely to the appropriate care team member.
  • Orients patient and family to room, call bell and unit while creating a therapeutic relationship.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patient and employee information.
  • Assists with the admission, transfer and discharge of patients as appropriate including transporting of patients throughout the hospital.
  • Completes hourly rounding. Participate in bedside shift report and shift huddles.
  • Assists in quality checks as designated (i.e. equipment temperature checks).
  • Promotes the bonding process of the mother/baby and family unit.
  • Supports the completion of the birth certificate process including collecting data from patients/family and sending to Health Information Management to meet required unit needs.
  • Assists with keeping patient rooms and common area stocked, clean and orderly.
  • Manages inventory and ordering for department.
  • Checks supplied and inventory for expiration dates, weekly or as needed.
  • Acts as an extra set of hands for the surgeon and first assistants for Cesarean sections:
  • Hands out sterile instruments and supplies.
  • Prepares surgical equipment, holds organs in place, or holds retractors, for caesarean section.
  • Arranges equipment and assists in surgical operations.
  • Helps prepare the operating room and the patient for a surgical procedure.
  • Sets up the sterile back table with instruments needed for the operation and drapes the patient and surrounding areas with a sterile barrier before the procedure begins.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates surgical field according to standards of care, policies and procedures, utilizing interpersonal, critical thinking and technical skills.
  • Performs instrumentation, equipment set-up, and medication preparation according to established policy and procedures. Performs other job duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:
Successful completion of nurse aide training program required with current State of Michigan Nursing Assistant certification required at hire or within 4 months of hire OR Graduate of Nursing School and Current Michigan LPN License required, or successful completion of Medical Assistant program required with current CMA certification required. Additional requirements include:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • NRP certification required within 3 months of hire
  • BLS certification
