Job description

Transplant PsychiatristNorthwell Transplant Institute

Northwell Health, one of the nation’s largest academic healthcare systems, is recruiting a  Transplant Psychiatrist to be a key member of Northwell’s Transplant Institute’s growing Transplant Psychiatry team, which articulates with the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry program at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH). The successful candidate will help implement the vision of comprehensive and multidisciplinary behavioral health services for transplant patients at NSUH, including:

  1. provision of inpatient psychiatric consultations and follow-up visits to medical/surgical inpatient transplant candidates and donors.
  2. addressing the psychiatric, psychological and social challenges associated with organ transplantation,
  3. performing donor evaluations for suitability of living organ donors.
  4. engaging in multidisciplinary collaboration with – medicine specialists, surgeons, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.
  5. evaluating and treating patients pre- and post-transplant (inpatient and outpatient) that have behavioral complications from medical illness, medications, and/or psychiatric disorders that are co-morbid with medical and surgical conditions, and medical complications of different psychiatric disorders.

While the transplant psychiatrist is a full-time position based in the Transplant Psychiatry team within the Northwell Transplant Institute, this individual is also a full-fledged member of the Department of Psychiatry with diverse academic opportunities that include attendance at Psychiatry Grand Rounds, faculty meetings, and faculty development seminars; and training and supervision of psychiatry residents, psychosomatic medicine fellows, and rotating medical students.

The Northwell Transplant Institute combines all solid organ transplant programs which include the heart, lung, liver, and kidney programs under one umbrella. The Transplant Institute has a strong partnership with the Departments of Medicine, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Psychiatry and Northwell’s Lung Institute. With an integrated network of dedicated interdisciplinary clinical and administrative professionals, Northwell has continued to invest in system-wide organ failure programs across several hospitals, regions, and ambulatory sites. Northwell also has a robust ECMO and ECMO-to-go program, supported by the Northwell Center for Emergency Medicine Services (EMS). Northwell EMS operates one of the largest hospital-based EMS services in the country, an integrated centralized transfer center, as well as a multi-aircraft air-medical transport program. The Northwell Transplant Institute’s committed and highly trained team of medical and surgical transplant specialists use innovative and collaborative approaches to improve outcomes and access to transplantation for patients with all stages of end organ failure.

Transplant procedures are performed at two top-ranked hospitals with advanced surgical capabilities and specialty trained staff – North Shore University Hospital and Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Before and after the transplant procedure, patients may be seen at one of team’s 40+ office locations.

North Shore University Hospital (NSUH)

North Shore University Hospital, a 766-bed teaching hospital, is one of the cornerstones of Northwell Health, providing the full spectrum of clinical healthcare services for patients of all ages. Located 10 minutes from Zucker Hillside Hospital, the flagship behavioral health facility of Northwell, in Manhasset, New York, NSUH employs more than 1,900 nurses and 6,000 staff members. The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications and experience:

Education and Experience

  1. Board certified in Psychiatry with advanced training in transplant psychiatry preferred. Candidates who are fellowship trained in either Psychosomatic Medicine (Consultation Liaison Psychiatry) or Addiction Psychiatry are preferred.
  2. Must have or be eligible for New York State medical licensure.
  3. Minimum of 2 years of attending-level experience in either C-L Psychiatry or Addiction Psychiatry, preferably with transplant psychiatry focus.
  4. Clinical experience preferably within a large health system or academic medical center.
  5. Strong knowledge of Transplant Psychiatry, evidence-based practices, and quality improvement methodologies.
  6. Demonstrated ability to function in a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
