Monday-Friday (occasional evenings and weekends) Position is available for a Hybrid Telework workweek
POSITION PURPOSE:
Supports the enterprise-wide Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) network operations, development of monitoring tools and procedures, router and switch configurations, backup systems, network disaster recovery, improvement of the existing network architecture and design, and the logistics involved with the procurement and installation of network infrastructure equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
  • Extensive knowledge of network fundamentals including cabling standards, TCP/IP and network addressing;
  • Extensive knowledge of common network hardware including Cisco switches, routers, and wireless access points;
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point; Google Apps;
  • Knowledge of software change management, defect management and software support;
  • Knowledge of network segmentation and VLAN implementation;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills; ability to participate in and encourage team management concepts and promote a positive working environment;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • High commitment to achieving goals and plans;
  • Ability to plan, positively influence, and negotiate;
  • Ability to analyze technical documents/specs and translate to business rules;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree Computer Science or related technical field; AND
  • Technical project management experience; AND
  • Experience in network architecture and design; AND
  • Experience in the successful establishment of production networks.

An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job may be considered.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Certification in network fundamentals;
  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license according to the State of North Carolina requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assists with the design and implementation of networks for new construction and renovation projects.
  2. Supports the planning, configuration, and deployment of LAN/WAN infrastructure, including Cisco switches, routers, wireless access points, Cisco Nexus devices and Firewalls.
  3. Supports data center operations, including connectivity, rack elevation documentation, structured cabling, and interconnectivity with core networking infrastructure.
  4. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local requirements for internet content filtering and cybersecurity best practices.
  5. Troubleshoots and resolves reported network issues received via the Help Desk and escalate, as necessary.
  6. Monitors network performance and security, using appropriate tools such as Nagios, Wireshark or Meraki Dashboard to identify, report, and remediate issues proactively.
  7. Applies configuration management procedures to modify, track, and maintain network systems and infrastructure.
  8. Maintains accurate documentation and updated drawings for the WAN and each site's LAN, including topology diagrams, device configurations, and IP addressing schemes using tools such as NetBox or Visio.
  9. Tracks warranty status, lifecycle, and upgrade documentation for WAN, LAN, and NOC hardware and software components.
  10. Performs other related duties, as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff and staff members. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force. The work requires activities frequently involving driving automotive equipment.
