As we staff up to support a new program, this Principal/Senior NOC Network Technician will have the opportunity to be on the ground floor and help define the trajectory of our future!
A DAY IN THE LIFE:
In this role, you will support a high-impact Network Operations Center that forms the backbone of global subsea service delivery. This role provides the opportunity to modernize NOC best practices and shape a world-class operations culture that scales while maintaining customer trust and operational excellence in a mission-critical subsea environment. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Incident and Problem Resolution:
  • Spectrum Sharing Modules (SSM), Power Feed Equipment (PFE), and terrestrial backhaul connectivity (DWDM, Coherent Optics, OTN).
  • Support root-cause analysis (RCA) for cable faults and implement corrective actions for recurring system instabilities.
  • Collaborate with Incident managers during P1/P2 events (e.g., cable cuts), providing technical direction for traffic restoration via restoration pairs or diverse paths.
  • Interface with marine maintenance authorities, cable ships, and subsea vendors to expedite undersea repairs or hardware replacement (RMA).
Network Maintenance and Change Implementation:
  • Plan and execute approved maintenance on subsea wet-plants and dry-plants following CAB authorization and MOP standards.
  • Conduct firmware upgrades on transponders, gain equalization adjustments, and validation testing on submerged repeaters and branching units.
  • Ensure adherence to change control and documentation standards, maintaining strict rollback and verification plans for high-latency transoceanic circuits.
  • Review and validate post-change outcomes, reporting optical SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) metrics and identifying improvement opportunities.
Monitoring and Optimization:
  • Tune optical monitoring thresholds and alarms to differentiate between seasonal "ocean noise" and genuine system degradation.
  • Use NMS and specialized subsea tools (Coherent OTDR, COTDR, Unit-specific Element Managers) to identify fiber anomalies and performance trends.
  • Recommend and implement proactive measures to enhance network resilience, such as optimized power feeding or automated rerouting.
  • Collaborate with Marine Engineering and QA teams to update optical baselines and improve emergency runbooks.
Documentation and Knowledge Sharing:
  • Maintain accurate and version-controlled documentation for straight-line diagrams (SLDs), cable landing station (CLS) layouts, and link budgets.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Subsea NOC Knowledge Base (KB) regarding specific cable system architectures.
  • Mentor and train Level I and Level II NOC staff through hands-on guidance in optical physics and peer review sessions.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical discipline preferred; equivalent professional experience and specialized training may be considered in lieu of a formal degree.
  • BICSI certified Technician (TECH) preferred, other BICSI or equivalent optical/marine certifications may be considered.
  • 8+ years of experience in enterprise or service provider network operations, with a heavy emphasis on optical transport and subsea systems.
  • Strong technical expertise in high-capacity transport (Ciena, Infinera, Nokia, NEC, SubCom), DWDM, and subsea power feeding.
  • Deep understanding of OTDR/COTDR, Optical Link Budgets, Q-factors, Chromatic Dispersion, and PMD.
  • Experience with NMS, ITSM, and logging platforms (ServiceNow, SolarWinds, Splunk, or vendor-proprietary EMS).
  • Working knowledge of scripting or automation tools (Python, Ansible, or similar) for managing large-scale optical fleets preferred.
  • Certifications: CCNP (required), JNCIP, or equivalent advanced vendor certification preferred; ITIL v4 Foundation a plus.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
  • Advanced Optical Diagnostics and Subsea Troubleshooting
  • Root Cause and Problem Analysis (Wet-plant vs. Dry-plant)
  • Change Implementation and CAB Readiness
  • Mentoring and Technical Leadership
  • Monitoring Optimization and Automation Awareness
  • Documentation Quality and Regulatory Compliance (ICPC standards)
ABILITY TO WORK REMOTE:
The work associated with this role is expected to be performed on-site at our San Diego Area location, though some travel may be required for periodic support as needed.
