What is a NAVSEA intern?

A NAVSEA Intern is a participant in the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) internship program, which provides students and recent graduates with hands-on experience in engineering, business, and technical fields related to the U.S. Navy. Interns work alongside civilian and military professionals on projects that support the design, construction, and maintenance of Navy ships and systems. The program aims to develop future leaders by offering mentorship, training, and real-world experience in naval engineering and support. NAVSEA internships are typically paid and may lead to full-time employment upon successful completion.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a NAVSEA intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a NAVSEA Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on engineering and technical projects that support the U.S. Navy’s shipbuilding and maintenance missions. Interns often assist with tasks like data analysis, technical documentation, project management, and research under the supervision of experienced engineers and scientists. You'll have opportunities to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and may participate in shipyard visits, design reviews, and briefings. This experience is designed to provide insight into real-world naval engineering challenges while building professional skills and networks within NAVSEA.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a NAVSEA intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a NAVSEA Intern, you generally need a background in engineering, computer science, or related technical fields, often supported by enrollment in an accredited college program. Familiarity with CAD software, Microsoft Office Suite, and basic project management systems is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork skills help interns stand out in collaborative and technical environments. These skills and qualifications are vital for contributing to NAVSEA's mission of developing and maintaining reliable naval systems and supporting national defense projects.
