What Does a Nanny Do?

A nanny plays a special role in a child’s life. Nannies are childcare professionals who assist parents with the day-to-day work of caring and raising children and are responsible for the children’s well-being and supportive of their emotional needs. As a nanny, your responsibilities may include preparing meals, dressing and bathing the children, arranging playdates, accompanying children to activities, and helping with schoolwork. Nannies typically work during the parent's work hours, but some families have nannies come early in the morning or stay at night until the kids go to bed. You may also be responsible for dropping off and picking up the kids at school and performing light housework.

What are nannies?

Nannies are childcare professionals who provide personalized care and supervision for children, usually within the family's home. Their responsibilities often include preparing meals, organizing activities, assisting with homework, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the children they watch over. Nannies can work full-time, part-time, or live-in, and may also handle light housekeeping related to the children. They play an important role in supporting families by offering reliable and nurturing care tailored to each child's needs.

In summary, a nanny provides ongoing, long-term childcare with potential certifications and a regular schedule, while a babysitter offers temporary, occasional care without formal credentials. Both roles serve different needs based on the family's requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nanny, you need strong childcare knowledge, first aid/CPR certification, and often experience or training in early childhood development. Familiarity with child safety systems, age-appropriate activities, and sometimes communication apps for parent updates are important technical tools. Patience, reliability, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help nannies build trust and connect with both children and parents. These abilities are vital for ensuring the child's safety, fostering healthy development, and maintaining positive family relationships.

How do nannies typically coordinate with parents to ensure consistent child care routines?

Nannies often maintain open and regular communication with parents to align on daily routines, discipline approaches, and developmental activities for the children. This can involve daily handover notes, shared digital calendars, or scheduled check-ins to discuss the child's progress and any concerns. By working collaboratively, nannies help provide stability for the children and adapt to any changes in family needs or schedules. This partnership is key to delivering high-quality, personalized care and fostering a positive home environment.
