What is a Summer Time Nanny?

A Summer Time Nanny is a childcare professional who is hired to care for children during the summer months, usually when school is out. Their duties often include planning fun and educational activities, supervising outings, preparing meals, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the children. Summer nannies may work for families who need extra help while parents are at work or traveling. They can work on a full-time or part-time basis, depending on the family's needs. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children and want a temporary or seasonal position.

What are some common challenges a Summer Time Nanny may face, and how can they be addressed?

Summer Time Nannies often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying daily routines, managing multiple children with different needs, and keeping activities engaging throughout the summer break. To address these, successful nannies plan a flexible but structured schedule, communicate proactively with parents about expectations, and prepare a variety of age-appropriate indoor and outdoor activities. Building rapport with children and setting clear boundaries early on also helps create a positive and safe environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Summer Time Nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Time Nanny, you need experience in childcare, basic first aid knowledge, and often a high school diploma or relevant certification such as CPR. Familiarity with scheduling apps, communication tools, and sometimes household management systems is commonly required. Patience, creativity, and strong communication skills help nannies engage children and build trust with families. These abilities ensure children's safety, foster their development, and create a positive and reliable environment for both kids and parents.

Job description

A warm, welcoming family with three bright, curious, and energetic boys (ages span elementary/middle school) is seeking an exceptional career nanny to work alongside their long-term nanny of 12 years. This is a wonderful opportunity for a highly experienced professional who thrives in an active household, enjoys working collaboratively, and is passionate about helping children grow into confident, kind, and capable individuals. The family has employed long-term nannies for many years and values creating a supportive, respectful, and enjoyable working environment. They are looking for someone to become an integral part of their caregiving team for years to come.

This position is live-out during the school year (41 weeks of the year) and live-in during the Summer (11 weeks of the year), as follows:

For 41 weeks of the year: (Live-Out, 35 hours guaranteed, Upper East Side):

  • Four weekday afternoons per week: 2:30 pm – 7 pm
    • School pick-up
    • Homework support
    • Dinner and evening routine
  • One full day per week (typically Wednesday, but flexible): 7 am –7 pmm
    • Morning routine and school drop-off
    • Driving to activities (in family’s car)
    • Full-day childcare responsibilities, primarily alongside the family’s long-time nanny
    • Assist with household activities and errands

~1-2 evenings per week:

  • Evening babysitting
  • Activity transportation (including driving additional children to sports in Long Island City)

Summer schedule (11 weeks of the year - Live-In, Coastal CT + Hamptons):

From ~June 21 through Labor Day, the nanny will live-in with the family 5 days per week, arriving on Sunday evening and returning to their home on Friday late afternoon/early evening:

  • Full days – 7 am-7 pm Monday through Friday (20 hours of overtime per week)
  • First six weeks on the Connecticut coast ~1.5 hours from NYC
  • ~August 1 through Labor Day in Hamptons

Accommodation includes a private bedroom and shared bathroom (with the family’s other nanny) in CT and a private bedroom with a private bathroom in the Hamptons.

During summer camp hours, there is significant downtime that could involve family assistant tasks during that time.

Household Environment

This is a relaxed, informal household where kindness, teamwork, and mutual respect are priorities.

Both parents have demanding careers and appreciate professionals who take initiative while communicating openly. Grandparents are actively involved but are supportive and respectful of the nanny's role, allowing caregivers to lead while providing help when appropriate.

The home is designed for active children, with dedicated play and sports spaces, and the family embraces a fun, energetic atmosphere.

  • School pick-up and drop-off
  • Driving children to sports and activities
  • Swimming supervision (must be a confident swimmer)
  • Homework support
  • Planning engaging activities
  • Supporting routines and transitions
  • Encouraging independence and positive behavior
  • Helping children regulate emotions with patience and consistency
  • Children's organization and planning
  • Occasional children's meal preparation when needed
  • Assist with household activities and errands

One of the children is exceptionally bright and benefits from structure, routine, and calm, proactive guidance. The ideal nanny should be fluent in child development and emotional regulation, remain calm under pressure, anticipate transitions, and help him successfully regulate his emotions through consistency, communication, and positive reinforcement (e.g., he loves sticker charts).

The family is seeking someone who genuinely enjoys engaging with children through sports, outdoor play, imaginative activities, games, homework support, and meaningful interaction.

The family employs a housekeeper who manages the majority of the children's laundry, and their long-time nanny oversees the children's meal preparation. If the long-time nanny is away or unwell, the successful candidate should be comfortable preparing simple, nutritious meals and snacks for the children.

Required travel:

1 x week over Spring Break (generally Florida)

Optional travel:

4th July weekend in the Hamptons

Thanksgiving in the Caribbean

There may also be international travel, TBD.

  • Warm, confident, calm, and emotionally intelligent
  • Active and energetic
  • Comfortable with sports, swimming, and outdoor play
  • Highly organized and proactive
  • Skilled at creating routines and managing transitions
  • Knowledgeable about child development and emotional regulation
  • Able to set clear, kind boundaries
  • Comfortable collaborating with parents, grandparents, and another nanny
  • An excellent communicator
  • A safe and confident driver with a clean driving record

An educational background in Child Psychology, Special Education, Behavioral Science, Early Childhood Education, or other related field is highly valued. Candidates with professional experience supporting children with anxiety, emotional regulation challenges, or executive functioning needs are especially encouraged to apply.

  • Valid US Passport, Green Card, or Employment Authorization Card (EAC)
  • Driver required (family vehicle provided – candidates should be comfortable driving a minivan)
  • Pet-friendly (family dog- a 7-year-old Cockapoo is cared for by the other nanny and a dog walker)

  • $55++/hr (equating to a minimum base salary of $126,775)
  • 3 x weeks PTO - 1 x week at Christmas, 1 x week over Spring Break, and 5 days of the nanny’s choosing
  • Transportation costs covered to and from the City during the Summer
  • MetroCard provided
