Job description

The Marketing Intern supports the Marketing & Communications department through hands-on assistance with content creation, campaign support, and promotional efforts. This position is designed as a structured, learning-based experience that provides exposure to museum marketing, cultural storytelling, and audience engagement while supporting departmental goals.

The internship program offers meaningful professional development, portfolio-building opportunities, and real-world marketing experience.

NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of the many music genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. The Museum will share the story of the American Soundtrack, integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the execution of marketing campaigns supporting exhibitions, programs, events, and institutional initiatives.
  • Support social media and digital marketing efforts, including content drafting, short-form video support, and engagement monitoring.
  • Assist with the creation and organization of marketing assets such as graphics, flyers, templates, and promotional materials.
  • Support event marketing efforts, including pre-event promotion and post-event recap content.
  • Maintain organized digital folders and assist with marketing workflow tracking as assigned.
  • Participate in weekly check-ins, planning meetings, and feedback sessions.
  • Complete a capstone project aligned with departmental priorities by the end of the internship term.
  • Perform other related duties assigned to support the Marketing & Communications team.

Education and Experience:

  • Enrolled in a college or university program in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, Media Studies, Museum Studies, or a related field.
  • Available to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • No prior professional experience required; coursework or academic projects may substitute.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to meet deadlines and follow established workflows.
  • Ability to receive feedback and make revisions as needed.


All Staff Duties:

  • Assures strong communications between NMAAM and all external constituents.
  • Actively seeks to learn the history of NMAAM.
  • Supports and promotes the museum’s mission.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special events.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Physical Demands: 

Ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds.  Ability to sit/stand for long periods of time. Ability to manage multiple tasks assigned. Works in a typical office environment.
