What is a music coordinator?

A music coordinator is the supervisor of the music selection process for a production. They might work anywhere from a school music department to a Hollywood blockbuster. As a music coordinator, your primary responsibilities revolve around selecting a soundtrack or setlist that best matches the intended audience. Depending on the industry, your day-to-day might include researching relevant music, securing the rights to songs, and hiring composers to write original music for the soundtrack, all while sticking to a strict budget. Especially in smaller roles, you may also coordinate practices with your musicians or singers. In the film industry, your job may stretch from late pre-production to release, but you will complete most of your work after the filming is complete, during the sound editing process. While film and television might be the most glamorous roles, you can find positions with schools, opera companies, community theater groups, or orchestras. More than half of those in the field work with religious and civic organizations and similar venues.

How much does a music coordinator make?

A music coordinator's average salary varies based on experience and industry, but typically ranges from $40,000 to $80,000 annually. In larger markets or with more experience, salaries can exceed this range, especially for roles involving extensive project management and industry contacts.

How does a music coordinator typically collaborate with other departments during a production?

A Music Coordinator works closely with directors, producers, music supervisors, and legal teams to ensure that all musical elements are properly selected, licensed, and scheduled for a production. Regular communication with the creative team helps to align musical choices with the project's vision, while coordination with legal and administrative staff ensures all rights and contracts are in order. This collaborative environment often requires strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt to shifting production timelines or creative feedback.

What does a music coordinator do?

A Music Coordinator is responsible for managing the music-related aspects of a production, such as film, television, or live events. Their duties include sourcing, licensing, and organizing music tracks, working closely with composers, music supervisors, and production teams to ensure that all musical elements are delivered on time and within budget. They also handle administrative tasks, like securing rights and managing contracts, to ensure compliance with copyright laws.

To thrive as a Music Coordinator, you need a strong understanding of music theory, licensing procedures, and project management, often supported by a degree in music, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs), music licensing databases, and rights management systems is typically required.
