Department Information
The Bachelor of Arts in Music program at Georgia Southwestern State University has a rich history of providing a student-centered curriculum with graduates pursuing teaching and performance opportunities throughout the region. Housed in the Department of Music, Communication & Emerging Media, the program is known for its commitment to providing a comprehensive music education curriculum that embraces diverse genres, styles, and cultural influences. Students may choose from a variety of majors, minors, and certificates to fit their talents and interests and can engage with a wide range of courses, covering areas such as music theory and history, music education and performing arts, to popular music and theater productions.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as Director of Bands, providing artistic, administrative, and academic leadership for all instrumental performance ensembles.
  • Direct the Concert Band and Athletic Band.
  • Lead instrumental recruitment initiatives, with strong emphasis on:
    • Recruiting music majors interested in performance, music education, and related fields.
    • Recruiting non¿music majors to participate in ensembles and maintain a robust campus¿wide performing arts presence.
    • Building and nurturing relationships with regional high school band programs, directors, and community organizations.
    • Develop and create recruitment opportunities such as honor bands, marching festivals and competitions, and Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE).
  • Teach courses based on expertise and departmental needs, which may include: Instrumental Methods, Applied Lessons (Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion), Music Appreciation, Conducting, Music Theory and Aural Skills, and Music History.
  • Deliver a variety of courses in the department according to interest and departmental needs in multiple formats including, but not limited to, online, hybrid, and face-to-face.
  • Provide dedicated advising and mentorship to students as assigned, fostering their academic and professional growth.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to service through active participation in recruitment, departmental, University, and professional activities.
  • Actively engage in Student Success Initiatives and Professional Development.
  • Other duties assigned by the Department Chair, Dean, and Administration.

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in music, music education, wind/band conducting, instrumental performance, or a related field (earned by the time of appointment).
  • Full-time, 10-month, non-tenure track (August 1 - May 31), with the possibility of summer teaching.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching k-12 and university-level.
  • Experience recruiting for collegiate music programs.
  • Experience teaching in online and hybrid modalities.
  • Experience collaborating across disciplines.
  • Experience serving as an academic advisor.
  • Experience coordinating students in experiential learning opportunities, internships, and High Impact Practices (HIPs).
  • Ability to engage students from diverse academic backgrounds, including non¿majors.

Proposed Salary
  • $50,000-$55,000
