Job description

Drive Cary Academy’s 45-foot motor coach bus for field trips, athletic games and other school programs and activities, which could include overnight trips. Operate our 45-foot Motor Coach (Limousine model) in accordance with state/federal DOT regulations. Conduct per-trip and port-trip bus inspections to ensure the bus in in good working condition. Complete the DOT-required driver electronic log and DVR report during and after each trip. Observe safety & traffic rules of the road to include Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Work with the lead adult trip chaperone to maintain a safe environment for all passengers. Works effectively with other Cary Academy departments to ensure the needs of the Cary Academy community are met.

Actively support the school’s diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism work in furtherance of Cary Academy’s commitment to equity and justice.  In conjunction with manager, identify and pursue ongoing professional development.  Complete all required administrative, operational, and professional development tasks and activities in a responsive and timely manner per school operating policies and procedures.  Perform other projects and duties as assigned.
The individual in this position is expected to:

  •  Be DOT qualified with a valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B or higher) with (P) passenger designation.
  •  Possess a DOT approved medical certification from a DOT authorized healthcare facility.
  •   Meet Cary Academy’s background check and driving record requirements.
  •   Complete and pass Cary Academy’s driver training course and road test.
  •  Ability to drive on overnight trips as needed.
  •   Work collegially with and possess excellent customer service to employees, parents and members of the Cary Academy and external community in a highly collaborative environment.  Work effectively with vendors, contractors, and/or other business partners, professionals, and outside organizations.
  •  Maintain confidentiality and interact with students, parents, and employees as well as internal and external constituents with sensitivity and understanding.
  •   Perform position responsibilities in a professional manner that models and ensures a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and work environment and upholds the school’s commitment to its cornerstones (the mission, the vision, the values, the beliefs, the employee culture and the portraits of a teacher and a graduate).
  •   Meet the expectation of regular, predictable, and reliable attendance
    Education/Training: High School or equivalent.
    Experience: At least 3 years of CDL driving experience driving commercial vehicles; Motor Coach experience strongly preferred.  
    Equivalency:  Directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience may be considered in place of the above requirements.  

Days:  This position is scheduled to work based on school transportation demands, which may include school day-time trips, school afternoon/evening trips, weekend trips, and some school overnight trips lasting from 1 to several days.

Hours: Although the hours for this position are unpredictable, the school aims to provide a schedule as far as a month in advance when possible, especially for overnight and weekend trips.  This position will be called upon after standard school hours and on overnight and weekend trips as needed. We anticipate the hours will not exceed 25 hours/week except upon occasion.
