Position Summary

The custodian position is responsible for helping maintain a clean and safe environment of all inside spaces which include Residential housing, Academic buildings, Athletic facilities, Student centers and dining locations for Elon University Campus. This includes, but not limited to, maintain and cleaning equipment, the cleaning and sanitizing of bathrooms, vacuuming floors, and removing all trash from the premises, cleaning of biohazards and high touch areas. Custodians are also responsible for monitoring special events and athletic games across campus making sure areas are clean and sanitized during events.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing during cleaning. The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs. Ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects. Skill in communication in order to provide information to supervisors or co-workers by telephone or in person.

Job Duties

  • Maintain Cleanliness of Campus
    • Clean all areas of the assigned building. Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
    • Short list of cleaning duties are as follows: Remove trash and replenish all dispensers, paper products, and soap.
    • Dust furniture and all woodwork, sweep, and vacuum floors daily.
    • Clean and sanitize all bathrooms and showers in assigned areas as well as counter tops and stalls. Clean and sanitize areas that may contain biohazardous materials/fluids.
    • Clean and sanitize classrooms and reset chairs in room.
  • Custodial Closets/Equipment
    • Maintain custodial closets in a neat and orderly fashion.
    • Requisition supplies or equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
    • Maintain Cleaning Equipment Report Maintenance Issues Found on Campus
  • Reporting Maintenance Issues Found on Campus
    • Notify the proper channels with repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, or electrical systems are needed.
  • Building Safety and Security
    • Use of wet floor signs, bathroom cleaning signs, and other safety signs when appropriate.
  • Annual Training
    • Perform other duties deemed necessary by the shift supervisor. Attend and utilize information provided by yearly training.
