Position Title: Peer Support/Academic Support Graduate Assistant
Department: Part-Time
Reports To: Director of Academic Success
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Graduate Assistant for Academic Support & Student Success serves as a key member of the Academic Support team, partnering closely with the Director of Student Success to advance the department's mission of promoting academic achievement, student engagement, retention, and belonging. The Graduate Assistant assists with the daily operations of Dickey Hall and the STEM Zone while supporting tutoring services, academic coaching, peer mentor development, student outreach, assessment, programming, and special projects that enhance the overall student experience.
This position extends beyond traditional graduate assistant responsibilities by providing meaningful leadership experience in higher education administration, student success, program development, and campus collaboration. The Graduate Assistant serves as a mentor, ambassador, and trusted resource for students while helping cultivate a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment where every student feels empowered to achieve their academic and personal goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Student Leadership & Supervision
  • Support the development and success of the Peer Academic Success Leaders by serving as a mentor, resource, and positive role model.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and training new Peer Academic Success Leaders.
  • Provide encouragement, peer coaching, and ongoing support to help foster professional growth and confidence.
  • Assist with coordinating schedules, shift coverage, and daily operational needs to ensure consistent student support services.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, welcoming, and student-centered team culture that promotes belonging, accountability, and academic excellence.

Academic Excellence Operations
  • Assist in overseeing the daily operations of Dickey Hall and the STEM Zone Lab.
  • Coordinate tutoring schedules and academic support services.
  • Ensure high quality customer service for all students utilizing Academic Services resources.
  • Help troubleshoot operational challenges and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

Student Success Programming
  • Assist with planning and implementing workshops, Supplemental Instruction, Study Buddy Program, Writing Center initiatives, and retention programming.
  • Represent Academic Excellence during New Student Orientation, admission events such as "Admit Day" and "Schreiner Saturday", campus resource fairs, and outreach initiatives.
  • Support students through academic coaching, success planning, and resource referrals.

Assessment & Strategic Initiatives
  • Monitor utilization data and student engagement metrics.
  • Assist with assessment reports, program evaluation, and departmental planning.
  • Support strategic retention initiatives and student success campaigns.
  • Lead special projects assigned by the Director of Academic Success.

Professional Leadership
  • Model professionalism, integrity, accountability, and servant leadership.
  • Build collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and campus partners.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Academic Excellence throughout the University.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold FERPA standards.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Admission to or enrollment in a Schreiner University graduate program.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Strong academic record
  • Previous experience as a Peer Tutor, Academic Success Leader, Resident Assistant, Orientation Leader, Student Government leader, Student Athlete leader, or comparable campus leadership role preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to mentor, coach, and motivate student employees.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
