What is a mobile hardware engineer?

A Mobile Hardware Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains the physical components (hardware) of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Their work involves creating circuit boards, selecting sensors, optimizing battery performance, and ensuring that all hardware components integrate seamlessly with mobile software. They often collaborate with software engineers, industrial designers, and manufacturers to develop reliable and efficient mobile devices. Mobile Hardware Engineers need strong knowledge in electronics, embedded systems, and often work with prototypes and testing equipment to ensure product quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile hardware engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Hardware Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and embedded systems, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with CAD tools, PCB layout software like Altium Designer, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications such as FCC or CE are also important. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills for excelling in this role. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, innovative mobile devices that meet technical specifications and industry regulations.

What are some common challenges mobile hardware engineers face when working with rapidly evolving mobile technologies?

Mobile Hardware Engineers often encounter challenges related to keeping pace with fast-changing technological standards, such as new wireless protocols, battery innovations, or compact component designs. Balancing performance, power efficiency, and device size demands close collaboration with software and design teams. Additionally, ensuring compatibility and reliability across diverse mobile platforms can require extensive testing and iteration. Staying up-to-date through continuous learning and adapting to new tools is key to overcoming these hurdles.

What is the difference between Mobile Hardware Engineer vs Mobile Electronics Technician?

Job description

ABOUT LVT

LVT is redefining how businesses operate in the physical world, moving beyond traditional security solutions to deliver AI-driven, actionable intelligence that makes sites smarter, safer, and more secure. Since pioneering our first mobile, solar-powered units, our commitment to scrappy, hands-on innovation has made us an established leader and one of the fastest-growing companies in intelligent site technology. We are building the next generation of solutions—from our physical units in the field to a powerful Agentic AI platform—that allows our customers to gain unprecedented visibility and control over safety, compliance, and operations. This is your chance to join a cutting-edge team that isn't just watching the world change, but actively building the technology that is changing it.

We're a team that's focused on growth and innovation, and we're proud that our crew, products, and leadership are being recognized for it.

  • A Top-Tier Growth Company: Named one of the Financial Times' Fastest Growing Companies 2025 and #10 on the Inc. 5000 Rocky Mountain Regional list for 2025.
  • Innovative Leadership: Our CEO, Ryan Porter, was named an EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2025, and our CTO, Steve Lindsey, was inducted into the Silicon Slopes CTO Hall of Fame in 2024.
  • Product & Software Excellence: We were named one of The Software Report's Top 100 Software Companies of 2023 and are a winner of the Security Today Govies Award for 2025.
ABOUT THIS ROLE

As a Senior DevOps Engineer at LVT, you will play a pivotal role in designing, scaling, and securing the cloud infrastructure and platform engineering solutions that power our next-generation Agentic AI platform and massive IoT edge fleet. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager of DevOps, you will collaborate with cross-functional software and hardware engineering teams to drive automation, robust GitOps workflows, and resilient systems design. Your expertise will directly enhance the operational reliability, security, and velocity of our global intelligent site technology.

This role is based out of our headquarters in American Fork, Utah. It will operate on a hybrid schedule initially, with the expectation of transitioning to a full in-person, in-office model.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Infrastructure Architecture: Own, architect, and continuously optimize cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code across multi-region production environments to support LVT's massive scaling needs.
  • Orchestration & Containerization: Manage, upgrade, and optimize high-availability Kubernetes clusters, focusing on seamless workload performance, advanced networking, and secure configurations.
  • Deployment Automation: Drive the continuous adoption and maturation of GitOps practices to build robust, secure, and highly predictable deployment pipelines.
  • Cloud Operations: Design and maintain scalable cloud architectures, managing core services, networking, and identity access management while actively leading cost optimization and resource efficiency strategies.
  • Security & Zero-Trust Compliance: Ensure rigorous security boundaries and secrets compliance across all infrastructure layers by implementing zero-trust access frameworks and modern secrets management systems.
  • Edge & IoT Enablement: Support the operational health, connectivity, and deployment workflows of our global IoT and edge fleet technology, partnering with teams to implement high-throughput messaging infrastructures.
  • System Observability: Develop, implement, and maintain advanced observability, monitoring, and alerting frameworks to ensure real-time system health visibility and rapid incident resolution.
  • Technical Documentation & Culture: Establish thorough systems documentation, architectural diagrams, and runbooks, while actively championing an asynchronous, collaborative engineering workflow within the DevOps organization.
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • Production Experience: Brings 5+ years of proven DevOps, platform, or cloud infrastructure engineering experience within high-availability production environments.
  • Kubernetes Mastery: Possesses deep hands-on experience managing Kubernetes workloads, networking, RBAC, storage, and upgrades, with a strong preference for Amazon EKS.
  • Infrastructure as Code Expert: Demonstrates advanced Terraform and Terragrunt skills, with the capability to confidently own and refactor complex infrastructure module hierarchies.
  • GitOps Delivery: Experienced with declarative continuous delivery methodologies and GitOps tooling, with a strong preference for ArgoCD.
  • AWS Ecosystem Fluency: Exhibits deep technical knowledge of core AWS environments, including VPC design, IAM, EKS, ALB/NLB, S3, CloudWatch, and rigorous cloud cost management.
  • Systems Fundamentals: Highly comfortable with Linux systems administration, advanced shell scripting, and deep debugging at the operating system level.
  • Identity & Secrets Management: Proven experience managing secrets securely, with a strong preference for HashiCorp Vault , alongside exposure to zero-trust access platforms like Teleport, Boundary, or BeyondCorp.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Strong written communicator who excels at documenting complex systems, authoring practical runbooks, and executing within async-first workflows.
  • Advanced Domain Expertise (Plus): Experience or exposure to IoT/edge fleet management and MQTT brokers , observability platforms like Datadog or Coralogix , AWS GovCloud/FedRAMP compliance contexts , or overlay networking like NetFoundry and OpenZiti.
