What is a mid level Red Team?

Mid Level Red Team professionals are cybersecurity experts who simulate advanced cyber attacks on an organization’s systems to identify vulnerabilities and improve security defenses. They possess hands-on experience in penetration testing, social engineering, and adversary emulation, going beyond entry-level tasks to plan and execute complex attack scenarios. These professionals collaborate with security teams to assess risks and recommend remediation strategies, helping organizations strengthen their security posture against real-world threats.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level Red Team member?

To thrive as a Mid Level Red Team member, you need a solid understanding of penetration testing, adversary emulation, and security assessment methodologies, often supported by relevant experience and certifications like OSCP or GPEN. Familiarity with tools such as Metasploit, Cobalt Strike, Burp Suite, and scripting languages like Python or PowerShell is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and clear communication help you effectively simulate threats and report findings to stakeholders. These skills ensure realistic security testing, actionable insights, and improved organizational defenses against cyber threats.

What are some common challenges faced by mid level Red Team professionals, and how can they effectively overcome them?

Mid-level Red Team professionals often encounter challenges such as adapting to diverse security environments, staying updated with rapidly evolving attack techniques, and effectively communicating findings to non-technical stakeholders. Overcoming these challenges requires continuous learning, participating in threat intelligence communities, and refining both technical and soft skills. Collaborating closely with Blue Teams and regularly practicing with simulation tools can also help mid-level Red Teamers enhance their effectiveness and deliver actionable insights to improve organizational defenses.

What is the difference between Mid Level Red Team vs Penetration Tester?

The Mid Level Red Team and Penetration Tester roles share similar certifications and work environments, focusing on identifying security weaknesses. However, the Mid Level Red Team typically involves more collaborative, adversarial simulations across multiple attack vectors, whereas Penetration Testers often focus on individual assessments of specific systems. Both roles are essential in cybersecurity, with the Red Team having a broader scope of simulated attacks to test organizational defenses.

Define standards, tools, processes, and performance metrics for Red Team operations, balancing custom developed capabilities with commercial platforms and emerging AI security technologies.

Translate findings into actionable risk mitigation recommendations and communicate results effectively to technical stakeholders and senior leadership.

Support audit, compliance, risk management, and regulatory activities through threat informed testing and control validation.

Maintain awareness of evolving threat actor tactics, techniques, and procedures, applying industry best practices to Red Team operations.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

8+ years of progressive cybersecurity experience, including at least 5 years in offensive security, Red Team operations, adversary emulation, or penetration testing within a mid to large enterprise environment.

Strong understanding of attacker methodologies, enterprise attack paths, and modern offensive security frameworks.

Experience assessing AI security risks and conducting security testing of AI enabled products, services, applications, or workflows.

Proven success translating offensive security findings into measurable improvements in detection, response, and overall security posture.

Experience operating within highly regulated or risk sensitive environments.

Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to influence senior leaders and drive cross functional collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications
