Job Title: Online Microbiology Instructor

Position Type: Online Adjunct / Part-Time (Filled as Needed)
Position Summary
Professional Skills Institute is seeking qualified and student-centered instructors to teach Microbiology courses in a fully online environment. The instructor will provide engaging, high-quality instruction that supports diverse learners and promotes scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and real-world application in health sciences.
The course focuses on representative types of microorganisms, including their structure, function, cultivation, identification, and methods employed for their control. Emphasis is placed on microorganisms that cause human disease, the role of the immune system, and laboratory techniques used to characterize, control, and prevent the spread of microorganisms.
Primary Responsibilities
Deliver online instruction in Microbiology using the institution's learning management system
Facilitate student learning through lectures, discussions, assignments, laboratory-based activities, and assessments
Incorporate a variety of teaching strategies to support diverse learning styles and backgrounds
Evaluate student performance and provide timely, constructive feedback
Maintain accurate grade records and course documentation
Communicate regularly with students and respond to questions in a timely, supportive manner
Promote scientific reasoning and application of microbiological concepts to healthcare and disease prevention
Support student understanding of microorganisms, immune system function, and laboratory practices related to identification and control of microorganisms
Adhere to PSI academic policies, course outcomes, and instructional standards
Course Description
This course is a survey of representative types of microorganisms in terms of their structure, function, cultivation, identification, and methods employed for their control. Emphasis is placed on those causing human disease and the role of the immune system.
Laboratory Component: In this laboratory course, students observe, cultivate, characterize, and identify microorganisms while practicing techniques used to control, kill, and prevent the spread of microorganisms.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Biomedical Science, Health Science, or a closely related field OR a master's degree with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Microbiology or a related biological science from an accredited institution
Experience teaching or training in an online or technology-supported environment preferred
Demonstrated ability to engage and support diverse student populations
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Proficiency with instructional technology, presentation software, and learning management systems (such as Canvas)
Preferred Qualifications
Prior online teaching experience at the postsecondary level
Experience teaching microbiology, biology, health sciences, or laboratory-based coursework
Experience with discussion-based, applied-learning, or science-focused instructional methods
Commitment to student success and continuous instructional improvement
