Medical Writing Assistant information

What is a medical writing assistant?

Medical Writing Assistants are professionals who support medical writers and healthcare organizations in creating, editing, and organizing scientific documents, such as research manuscripts, clinical study reports, and regulatory submissions. They often help with literature searches, formatting, referencing, and ensuring documents adhere to industry standards. Their work is crucial in facilitating clear communication of medical and scientific information to various audiences, including healthcare professionals, regulatory bodies, and patients.

What types of documents might I be responsible for as a medical writing assistant, and how does this vary day-to-day?

As a Medical Writing Assistant, you may help draft, edit, and format a wide range of documents including clinical trial protocols, study reports, regulatory submissions, patient information leaflets, and scientific manuscripts. Your daily tasks often depend on project timelines, with some days focused on literature research and data collection, while others emphasize proofreading or coordinating feedback from medical writers, researchers, and regulatory affairs teams. This variety gives you exposure to different stages of the medical writing process and helps build a strong foundation for career advancement within medical communications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical writing assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Writing Assistant, you need a solid background in life sciences or healthcare, strong writing and editing skills, and often a relevant degree such as in biology or English. Familiarity with medical journals, referencing software like EndNote, and document management systems is common, and some employers may prefer candidates with certifications such as AMWA. Excellent attention to detail, time management, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure the production of accurate, high-quality medical documents that support research, regulatory compliance, and effective communication within the healthcare industry.

Job description

Title: Personal Assistant / Book Writing Assistant

Location: Orlando (Lake Nona), Florida

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM, plus availability on Thursdays from 4:30 PM – 5:00 PM for live online sessions

Pay: $20.00 per hour, plus $0.50 per mile when using your personal vehicle to transport me to appointments or other approved destinations.

About the Position

I am seeking a compassionate, dependable, organized, and trustworthy Personal Assistant to help me complete my inspirational book about overcoming a life-changing stroke and assist with growing my online stroke recovery platform. This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference while helping bring an important story and mission to life.

In 2012, I survived a hemorrhagic brainstem stroke. As a result, I have photophobia, which makes it difficult to look at bright computer screens, and mild dysarthria, which causes slight speech difficulties. Your primary role will be to type accurately as I dictate my book and assist with a variety of personal, household, and media-related tasks.

Primary Responsibilities:

● Type and organize my dictated book manuscript.

● Keep book chapters and notes organized.

● Assist with deleting emails, documents, and basic computer tasks.

● Help operate a phone or camera for my weekly online platform sessions.

● Use Adobe Premiere, CapCut, or similar video editing software to help put together recordings for my platform.

● Organize and prepare recorded content for sharing.

● Email completed recordings to designated individuals as needed.

● Accompany me to locations such as Celebration Hospital to see record therapy sessions or related content when needed. Also accompany me to my Book Editor for sessions.

● Ride with me on Access Lynx transportation when applicable (you do not need to use your own vehicle for these trips).

● Drive me to medical appointments and other approved destinations when needed (mileage reimbursed at $0.50 per mile).

● Assist with occasional errands.

Light Housekeeping During Downtime

When book-related work is caught up, assist with light housekeeping, including:

● Dusting

● Sweeping and mopping floors

● Cleaning kitchen counters

● Cleaning bathrooms

● Emptying trash

● Making the bed

● General tidying and organization

(No heavy lifting or deep cleaning is required.)

Preferred Qualifications

● Excellent typing and listening skills.

● Strong English grammar and spelling.

● Patient, dependable, compassionate, and trustworthy.

● Comfortable working with someone who has a disability.

● Good organizational skills.

● Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

● Comfortable using a smartphone or camera for recording video content.

● Familiarity with MoviePlus or similar video editing software is required.

● Ability to organize and email video recordings efficiently.

● Basic familiarity with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity, Claude or any AI program

● Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance (preferred but not always required due to Access Lynx availability).

● Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding my personal information and book.

Ideal Candidate

I’m looking for someone who is more than just an employee. I want someone who is trustworthy, encouraging, dependable, and genuinely interested in helping me accomplish an important life goal and grow a meaningful stroke recovery platform. This role has the potential to grow into something more as the platform and business expand.

If you enjoy helping people, have strong organizational skills, and would like to be part of a meaningful project, I would love to hear from you.
