Job description

Provides general medical assistance to physicians in an office or clinical setting and carries out clerical, billing, and processing functions of assigned work area. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the clinical supervision of a physician and administratively under an employee of higher grade who reviews work for conformance with policies and procedures.

  • High school graduate and/or GED equivalent.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program, including completion of an approved course or module in pharmacology.
  • Ability to type accurately on forms, lists, and so forth.
  • Ability to understand and execute both oral and written orders.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in written formats.
  • Ability to maintain required records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive relationship with patients, physicians, and other Medical Center staff.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • AAMA, AMT or NHA Certification as a Medical Assistant.
  1. Performs general medical assistance such as taking and recording vital signs, observing symptoms, recording histories, and administering injections and medications under the direction of a physician.
  2. Carries out or assists physician with diagnostic procedures or treatments.
  3. Ensures accurate and complete medical records, e.g., obtains necessary information for preparing new records; ascertains credit and insurance information; obtains any missing reports, tests results, x-rays, and so forth.
  4. Acts as receptionist for office; e.g., answers and screens phone calls, schedules and confirms appointments, takes messages, checks in patients.
  5. Performs other clerical duties for office or clinical area such as supply requisitions, billing, and receiving and recording payments for services rendered.
  6. Assists patients with problems encountered; assists in patient education.
  7. Keeps rooms cleaned and stocked with necessary supplies.
  8. Accesses computer/information system for retrieval or input of information.
  9. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) the unique needs of patient age groups served.
  10. Performs other related duties as required.
