JOB SUMMARY/ACCOUNTABILITY
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a key member of the executive leadership team responsible for designing, implementing, and leading a comprehensive fundraising and external relations strategy to support Matrix Human Services' mission. The CDO drives revenue growth through philanthropic giving, corporate partnerships, grants, and special events, ensuring long-term sustainability and expanded community impact. This role requires a strategic thinker and hands-on leader who can build strong relationships, inspire donors, and align development efforts with organizational priorities.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred in nonprofit management, business, or related field)
10+ years of progressive fundraising experience, including senior leadership roles
Proven track record of securing major gifts and leading successful fundraising campaigns
Experience managing and developing high-performing teamsย
Strong relationship-building and communication skillsย
Preferred
Experience in human services, education, or community-based nonprofits
Familiarity with Detroit philanthropic landscape (or relevant region)
Experience working with a Board of Directors
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
I. Strategic Leadership ย
Develop and execute a multi-year fundraising strategy aligned with Matrix Human Services' mission and growth goalsย
Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Board on development and external engagementย
Lead and mentor the development team, fostering a culture of accountability and performanceย
Partner with program leadership to align funding opportunities with programmatic priorities
II. Fundraising and Revenue Generation
Oversee all fundraising activities, including major gifts, annual giving, corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, and planned givingย
Manage and grow a portfolio of high-net-worth donors and key institutional fundersย
Set and achieve annual fundraising targets and revenue goalsย
Identify and secure new funding streams to diversify revenue
III. Donor and Stakeholder Engagementย
Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, foundations, corporate partners, and community stakeholdersย
Support and engage the Board of Directors in fundraising effortsย
Represent Matrix Human Services at community events, public forums, and networking opportunities
IV. Grants and Institutional Funding
Oversee grant strategy, including research, proposal development, submission, and reportingย
Ensure compliance with grant requirements and reporting deadlinesย
Strengthen relationships with government agencies and foundation partners
V. Marketing and Communication Collaborationย
Partner with marketing/communications to ensure consistent messaging and brand alignmentย
Oversee development-related communications, including campaigns, donor materials, and impact reportsย
Lead storytelling efforts that highlight program outcomes and community impact
