Math Teaching Assistant information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Math Teaching Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Teaching Assistant, you need strong mathematical knowledge, tutoring skills, and at least a bachelor's degree or progress toward one in mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with educational software, learning management systems (like Canvas or Blackboard), and tools such as Microsoft Excel or Google Classroom is often required. Patience, effective communication, and the ability to motivate and support diverse learners are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable Math Teaching Assistants to reinforce student understanding, foster engagement, and support classroom instruction effectively.

How does a Math Teaching Assistant typically support classroom instruction and student learning?

As a Math Teaching Assistant, you'll work closely with the lead teacher to facilitate lessons, clarify mathematical concepts for students, and provide individualized or small-group support as needed. Your daily responsibilities may include helping to prepare teaching materials, assisting with grading assignments, and answering student questions during class or office hours. Collaboration with other teaching assistants and educators is common to ensure consistent support for students and to share effective strategies. This role offers a great opportunity to develop your instructional skills and gain practical experience in educational settings, often serving as a stepping stone to a full-time teaching position.

What are math teaching assistants?

Math teaching assistants are individuals who support math teachers and professors in delivering instruction, tutoring students, grading assignments, and managing classroom activities. They often help clarify difficult concepts, assist with lesson preparation, and provide additional support to students who need extra help. Math TAs can work in K-12 schools, colleges, or universities, and may be undergraduate or graduate students themselves. Their role is crucial in creating a positive learning environment and ensuring all students have the resources they need to succeed in math.

Who We Are:

Across North America and all over the world, Mathnasium Learning Centers are committed to teaching children math so that they understand it, master it, and love it.

Our world-class curriculum is built upon the Mathnasium Method- the result of decades of hands-on instruction and development - and has changed the lives of children since 2002.

Why Work with Us:

At Mathnasium, we're passionate about both our students and our employees!

We set ourselves apart by providing our Math educators with:

  • A rewarding opportunity to transform the lives of 2nd-12th grade students
  • Consistent, but flexible part-time hours after school and on weekends
  • A fun, supportive, and encouraging work culture
  • Opportunities for advancement
  • Continuous training on effective teaching methodologies
  • All necessary curriculum and instructional tools

If you are driven, motivated, and eager to make a difference, we would love to meet you!

Job Responsibilities:

  • Teach and tutor students in-center, online, and/or via hybrid delivery using the Mathnasium Method and instructional practices.
  • Deliver individualized instruction in a group setting by meeting students at their academic level and building confidence in math.
  • Monitor student engagement, accuracy, and progress each session, ensuring completion of assigned pages, mastery checks, and learning plan goals.
  • Communicate student observations, progress, and challenges to the Lead Instructor and Assistant Center Director.
  • Maintain familiarity with student binders, prescriptives, and individualized learning plans while supporting grading and material organization.
  • Uphold a professional, safe, and structured learning environment by collaborating with team members, following center procedures, and remaining actively engaged on the instructional floor.

Qualifications:

  • Strong passion for math education and working with children in a supportive learning environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build rapport with students and families
  • Eagerness to learn, be coached, and consistently apply the Mathnasium Method
  • Exceptional math competency through at least Algebra II (or higher preferred)
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, student-centered setting
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to monitor student progress and engagement during sessions
  • Professionalism, punctuality, and reliability while on the instructional floor
  • Positive, patient, and encouraging demeanor with students of varying skill levels
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn digital instructional platforms and center systems
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while maintaining individual accountability

All applicants will be required to take a math literacy test to demonstrate math proficiency, provide work authorization, and pass a background check.

Mathnasium locations are independentlyowned and operated by franchisees of Mathnasium Center Licensing, LLC ("Mathnasium").Franchisees are independent business people and not employed by Mathnasium. Thus, each franchisee and each franchisee center is unique and the franchisee is alone responsible for all employment matters in their center. If you are hired to work at a center, the franchisee will be your employer, not Mathnasium.

The Mathnasium Mission
Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it.
Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.
Mathnasium makes math make sense, building children's confidence and a deep understanding and lifelong love of mathematics. With more than 1,000 locations on four continents, our franchised and company-owned learning centers provide tutoring from pre-K through high school.
The Mathnasium Method increases a child's math competency and improves their lives by opening the doors to higher education, greater career opportunities, and a better future. It is in that sense that we aim to change the world ... one child at a time.
Our teaching method, the Mathnasium Method, is the life's work of Larry Martinek, Mathnasium's Chief Instructional Officer and a teacher and math teaching consultant in the Los Angeles area for more than 35 years. The Mathnasium Method uses a time-tested, customized program which stems from a unique assessment to identify what students need to improve their math skills.
