Position Information
Position Type: Grant-Funded, School-Based Instructional Coach
Terms of Employment: 10-month position with summer and extended-year professional learning days as defined by the grant. Continuation of employment is contingent upon annual grant funding.
Reports To: Building Principal and District Supervisor, in coordination with the Delaware Department of Education
Salary: Current Teacher Salary Schedule, inclusive of OECs and benefits - see attached
Location: Dover Middle School Campus
Position Overview
The Middle School Mathematics Coach is a grant-funded, school-based instructional coaching position funded through the Delaware Department of Education Delaware Middle School Math Coaches Initiative. The purpose of this position is to provide sustained, job-embedded instructional coaching to improve mathematics instruction and student achievement in grades six through eight. This role focuses on strengthening Tier I mathematics instruction, supporting equitable access to high-quality instruction, and building long-term instructional capacity within the school.
In accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement, the coach will dedicate approximately eighty percent of assigned time to school-based instructional coaching and twenty percent of assigned time to state-directed professional learning, collaboration, and reporting requirements in partnership with the Delaware Department of Education.
Grant Conditions and Scope
  • This position is fully contingent upon annual state grant funding and may be discontinued if funding is reduced or eliminated.
  • The scope of work must align with the requirements of the Delaware Middle School Math Coaches Initiative.
  • The role is non-evaluative and focused exclusively on instructional improvement and teacher support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
School-Based Instructional Coaching
  • Provide direct, job-embedded instructional coaching to mathematics teachers in grades six through eight using coaching cycles, classroom modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and reflective feedback.
  • Support teachers in implementing Delaware Mathematics Standards and the Standards for Mathematical Practice with fidelity.
  • Support instructional strategies that promote conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and student engagement.
  • Mentor novice and early-career mathematics teachers to strengthen instructional practice and classroom effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with grade-level and content PLCs to strengthen Tier I mathematics instruction.

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
  • Support the implementation of district-adopted High-Quality Instructional Materials, including participation in required summer curriculum work.
  • Assist teachers with unit planning, lesson design, standards alignment, and instructional pacing.
  • Support teachers in the development and use of formative and summative assessments aligned to standards and instructional goals.
  • Assist teachers in analyzing student assessment data to inform instructional decisions and instructional adjustments.

Professional Learning and Capacity Building
  • Plan and facilitate job-embedded professional learning aligned to best practices in adult learning and district instructional priorities.
  • Participate in monthly professional learning sessions facilitated by the Delaware Department of Education focused on coaching skills, mathematics pedagogy, and progress monitoring.
  • Support the development of internal instructional capacity to sustain improvements beyond the grant period.

Data Collection, Reporting, and Compliance
  • Maintain and submit weekly coaching calendars and documentation of coaching activities.
  • Collect and organize evidence demonstrating the impact of coaching on teacher practice and student learning.
  • Submit required reports and documentation to support district and state evaluation of program effectiveness.
  • Participate in scheduled check-ins and maintain regular communication with Delaware Department of Education representatives.

Collaboration and Communication
  • Work collaboratively with building administrators to align coaching efforts with school improvement priorities.
  • Collaborate with district supervisors and state partners to ensure fidelity of implementation.
  • Communicate professionally and consistently with stakeholders regarding progress, needs, and instructional support.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Delaware Educator Licensure with certification in Middle Level Mathematics or Secondary Mathematics.
  • Minimum of five years of successful mathematics teaching experience at the middle or secondary level.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Delaware Mathematics Standards and standards-based instructional practices.
  • Experience supporting adult learners through coaching, mentoring, or professional learning.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience serving as a mathematics instructional coach or teacher leader.
  • Experience supporting the implementation of High-Quality Instructional Materials.
  • Experience facilitating professional learning communities or mathematics-focused professional development.
  • Knowledge of national and international mathematics instructional frameworks.
