Job description

Summary

The Materials Planning Manager is responsible for forecasting, planning, and purchasing raw materials to support production and customer demand while optimizing inventory levels and working capital. This role leads the materials planning function, oversees MRP execution, and ensures timely placement of purchase orders to maintain uninterrupted operations.

The position partners closely with Procurement, Operations, Finance, and key suppliers to balance service, cost, and inventory objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Planning & Forecasting

  • Lead raw material forecasting aligned with production plans and demand forecasts.
  • Own MRP (Material Requirements Planning) execution and parameter optimization.
  • Develop and maintain inventory strategies (safety stock, reorder points, lead times).
  • Monitor and adjust plans based on demand variability and supply constraints.

Purchasing Execution

  • Oversee timely and accurate purchase order creation and management.
  • Ensure alignment between material plans and supplier commitments.
  • Track supplier performance related to delivery, lead time, and responsiveness.
  • Collaborate with Strategic Sourcing on long-term supply strategies.

Inventory & Performance Management

  • Manage inventory levels to achieve service and working capital targets.
  • Reduce excess and obsolete inventory.
  • Analyze shortages, root causes, and corrective actions.
  • Establish KPIs (service level, material availability, forecast accuracy).

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop the materials planning team.
  • Drive process improvements and system enhancements.
  • Establish standard operating procedures and planning governance.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Operations to align production schedules and material availability.
  • Work with Finance on inventory projections and budget planning.
  • Support new product launches with material readiness planning.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Business, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in materials planning, supply planning, or procurement.
  • 2+ years of people leadership experience (preferred).
  • Experience in manufacturing or production environments strongly preferred.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and efficiency.
