They often collaborate closely but have distinct responsibilities within the supply chain and production cycle.

How does a material planning analyst typically collaborate with other departments to manage inventory and production schedules?

Material Planning Analysts work closely with procurement, production, and supply chain teams to ensure that materials are available when needed for manufacturing. They regularly communicate with suppliers and coordinate with production planners to align material deliveries with production schedules, minimizing delays and excess inventory. Effective collaboration often involves attending cross-functional meetings, sharing data on inventory levels and demand forecasts, and proactively addressing potential bottlenecks or shortages. Building strong relationships across departments is crucial for anticipating issues and maintaining efficient operations.

What does a material planning analyst do?

A Material Planning Analyst is responsible for ensuring that a company's production lines have the materials needed to operate efficiently. They analyze inventory levels, forecast material needs, coordinate with suppliers, and create purchasing schedules to prevent shortages or excess. Their work helps optimize production flow, reduce costs, and improve supply chain reliability. Material Planning Analysts often use specialized software to track inventory and collaborate with other departments such as procurement, production, and logistics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a material planning analyst?

To thrive as a Material Planning Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, supply chain knowledge, and typically a bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field. Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, advanced Excel skills, and sometimes certifications such as APICS CPIM are commonly required. Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These skills ensure accurate inventory management, efficient production planning, and smooth coordination within the supply chain.

Job description

Material Planning Analyst
Location: Austin, TX (100% Onsite)
Compensation: ~$80,000 base + 5% bonus
Direct Hire / Permanent Position

Overview
We are seeking a Material Planning Analyst to support production and customer delivery through effective material planning, ERP management, and cross-functional coordination. This role is focused on true material planning within a custom OEM manufacturing environment, with a strong preference for experience in electronics manufacturing.

This position works closely with a key customer account and requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage material readiness to meet production and delivery commitments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute day-to-day material planning activities to support production schedules and customer demand
  • Analyze and manage MRP/ERP outputs to ensure accurate supply planning and material availability
  • Coordinate with customers, purchasing, and production teams to ensure clear-to-build status
  • Maintain and update bill of materials (BOMs), item master data, and planning parameters
  • Monitor and track material shortages, excess, and inventory levels; drive corrective actions as needed
  • Generate and manage purchase orders based on demand and forecast requirements
  • Support customer-owned/consigned inventory and material flow
  • Use Excel to analyze data, track metrics, and support reporting needs
  • Identify and resolve data integrity issues within ERP and planning systems
  • Assist with engineering change orders (ECOs), deviations, and new product introductions (NPI)
  • Communicate risks, delays, or supply issues proactively to internal teams and customers

Required Qualifications
  • 1+ year of material planning experience (must be true planning, not purely analytical/reporting roles)
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment (electronics or custom OEM strongly preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with ERP/MRP systems
  • Strong Excel skills for data analysis and reporting
  • Experience working directly with customers and cross-functional teams
  • Understanding of BOMs, inventory management, and supply planning concepts

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in electronics manufacturing or EMS environments
  • Exposure to consigned materials or customer-owned inventory models
  • Familiarity with ECOs, NPI, and supply chain risk management

What We’re Looking For
  • A hands-on material planner who can translate demand into actionable supply plans
  • Strong communicator comfortable managing a primary customer relationship
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on data accuracy and execution
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, production-driven environment

Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disabilty, or veteran status
