Summary
This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief Operating Officer, Superintendent Senate Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent Tenant Services Division, Masonry Branch. The ideal candidate will serve as a journey level Mason.

Duties
Help
The tour of duty for this position is: Monday - Friday 5:00 A.M. - 1:30 PM. This position may be eligible for Alternate Work Schedule (AWS).
Tour of duty may include holidays and weekends on a regular or recurring basis. Rotating shift work may also be required.
This position is essential, which means the ideal candidate will be required to report to work during emergencies and inclement weather.
The individual selected for this position will, perform the following Masonry Work:
Performs a variety of journey-level masonry duties involving the maintenance, repair, alteration or construction of interior and exterior surfaces and structures, such as walls, partitions, floors, walks, drains, gutters and other similar structures built of common brick, face brick, firebrick, cinder block, concrete block, gypsum, glass block, terra cotta and varieties of artificial and natural stone. Makes visual inspection of work to be performed. Determines work methods and processes best suited to the job and plans and lays out work details.
Computes the number of courses of brick and block and corresponding thickness of the mortar so that courses come out evenly with sills, tops of windows, doors and other openings. Follows similar procedures for horizontal dimensions. Mixes mortar and applies to bricks or blocks and lays to form overlapping joints. Cuts brick and blocks to size with hammer or skill saw. Checks vertical and horizontal alignment of structures with level and plumb bob. Points up brick and stone work which involves stripping out old mortar, brushing out dust and dirt and applying new mortar with trowel.
Performs decorative stone, marble, granite and brick work. Repairs and maintains stone and brick joints by cleaning, cutting, raking and repointing with mortar and caulking compound. Mixes color toned mortar to match the color of the existing mortar. Takes care to match the color and texture of all materials worked.
Lays bricks and blocks. Sets stones and other materials on walls and partitions. Matches, cuts, cleans and polishes bluestone, flagstone, granite, limestone, marble, sandstone and terra cotta.
Repairs damaged marble cornices. Cuts and replaces metal hangers. Remounts, levels and points joints. When needed, repairs and re-sets marble moldings around doorways. When making repairs, locates matching materials and removes and replaces marble panels.
Uses hand and power tools such as brick and skill saw to cut and shape brick. Uses ax, chisel, hammer and pick to cut and shape stone. Uses other tools of the masonry trade such as caulking guns, cement mixers, chisels, drills, electric hammers, electric masonry saws, floats, grinders, Hilti masonry guns, jack hammers, levels, napping hammers, plumb bobs, pressure washers, squares, terrazzo finishing machines, rakes, shovels and trowels to maintain and repair columns, doorways, walls and stone cornices.
When working with other trades to make renovations or performing new construction, cuts openings in walls and finishes exposed surfaces.
Cuts and lays tile to ensure proper fit. Ensures color, texture, and size match existing materials. Sets, polishes, and repairs terrazzo.
Utilize knowledge of and comply with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Office of Congressional Workplace Rights, and AOC rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Provides or receives training, either on-the-job or through classroom training, to ensure that all safety practices and equipment are fully utilized. Uses required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
The performance of masonry work may require exposure to a variety of weather conditions while outdoors. Additionally, the incumbent may be subject to danger of falling when working from ladders, platforms, swing stage and scaffolds. The incumbent is exposed to dust and dirt while mixing mortar and while handling various masonry materials. The incumbent is required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment while working, including fall protection and respirators and a respirator will be required when exposed to lead paint, lead containments and dusty/dirty areas.
