Manufacturing Recruitment information

What is manufacturing recruitment?

Manufacturing recruitment refers to the process of finding, attracting, and hiring qualified candidates for jobs within the manufacturing sector. This includes roles such as machine operators, engineers, quality control specialists, and production managers. Recruiters in this field often need to understand technical skills, safety regulations, and the specific needs of manufacturing employers. Their goal is to ensure companies have the right workforce to meet production demands efficiently and safely.

What are some common challenges faced in manufacturing recruitment, and how can recruiters overcome them?

Manufacturing recruiters often encounter challenges such as talent shortages, rapidly changing skill requirements, and high competition for qualified candidates. To overcome these, recruiters can build strong relationships with local technical schools, stay updated on industry trends, and leverage technology to streamline the hiring process. Additionally, collaborating closely with hiring managers and production teams helps ensure a clear understanding of role requirements, enabling more effective candidate sourcing and selection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in manufacturing recruitment, and why are they important?

To thrive in Manufacturing Recruitment, you need a solid understanding of manufacturing industry roles, talent sourcing strategies, and typically a background in human resources or related fields. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), recruitment platforms like LinkedIn, and sometimes certifications such as SHRM-CP or PHR are highly valuable. Outstanding interpersonal skills, negotiation abilities, and adaptability help build relationships with both candidates and hiring managers. These skills ensure effective talent acquisition, streamlined hiring processes, and alignment of workforce capabilities with manufacturing business needs.

Job description

About the Company

We are a renewable energy and ocean technology company committed to rapidly developing and deploying technologies that will ensure a sustainable future for Earth by unlocking the vast energy potential of its oceans. Our focus is on capturing civilizational levels of ultra-low-cost renewable energy for applications including computing and affordable renewable fuels delivered to shore.

The company is a public benefit corporation headquartered in Portland, Oregon and backed by leading venture capitalists, philanthropic investors, university endowments, and private investment offices. We operate as an idea meritocracy where the best ideas change the company's direction on a regular basis.

About the Job

Our core technology is the node, a device that produces energy in the ocean's harshest conditions for years at a time without human maintenance or intervention. We are now scaling the manufacturing of this technology, and the talent we bring on board will be critical to that journey.

Our organization is entering an exciting manufacturing scale-up phase of growth, and building a world-class team is critical to our success. We are seeking a Senior Technical Recruiter, Manufacturing to support full-cycle recruiting efforts for technical roles across the organization. This person will bring deep expertise in talent acquisition strategy, sourcing, and candidate engagement within manufacturing and hardware environments to help us scale thoughtfully and intentionally. In close partnership with hiring managers and cross-functional stakeholders, this role will focus on identifying and securing top talent across production, operations, quality, and engineering functions while ensuring an exceptional candidate experience. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, high-impact environment and bring a continuous improvement mindset to everything they do.

Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills and be able to thrive in a creative, scrappy, and collaborative environment in which the best ideas change the company's direction on a regular basis. If you have recruited for manufacturing or hardware organizations and love the challenge of finding rare, specialized talent, we want you to apply.

Our staff have worked at organizations such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Boeing, Tesla, Apple, Virgin Orbit, Astra, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, New Relic, Bridgewater, Raytheon, Disney Imagineering, and the US Army and Air Force, as well as research universities, startups, and small companies across a range of industries.

Responsibilities

  • Manage full-cycle recruitment for highly specialized roles across our organization such as manufacturing, engineering, science, and technical functions with ability to support other functions from entry level to executive as needed.
  • Partner closely with hiring managers to understand team needs, role requirements, and ideal candidate profiles — including for roles tied to production scale-up and operations.
  • Develop and execute sourcing strategies to attract top technical and manufacturing talent through a mix of outbound search, referrals, and targeted campaigns.
  • Screen and assess candidates for technical and cultural alignment, guiding them through the interview process with a high-touch approach.
  • Working with our coordinator and hiring managers to gather requirements and support the smooth scheduling of onsite interviews, including logistics and ensuring a welcoming candidate experience.
  • Maintain strong pipelines of qualified candidates for high-priority and hard-to-fill positions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners including People Operations and hiring teams to ensure a smooth and consistent candidate experience.
  • Leverage recruiting data and market insights to inform search strategies and advise on hiring decisions.
  • Represent the company in conversations with candidates, acting as a knowledgeable and compelling ambassador of our mission and work.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends, compensation benchmarks, and evolving best practices in technical and manufacturing recruiting.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience, with a proven track record of hiring for manufacturing, technical, engineering, and scientific roles.
  • Experience recruiting for scaling manufacturing organizations, including roles in production engineering, quality, supply chain, and operations.
  • Demonstrated success in sourcing and engaging hard-to-find technical and manufacturing talent through outbound search, referrals, and targeted outreach.
  • Experience recruiting in startup or high-growth environments where priorities and structures evolve quickly.
  • Strong communicator with a candidate-first mindset and commitment to delivering an exceptional experience throughout the hiring process.
  • Strong knowledge and experience using applicant tracking systems (ideally Greenhouse) and sourcing tools such as LinkedIn Recruiter, Gem, or equivalent.
  • Adaptable and proactive, with the ability to operate effectively in environments that are fast-moving and often ambiguous.
  • Proven ability to partner effectively with hiring managers and cross-functional teams to define role requirements and hiring strategies.
  • Skilled in evaluating candidates for both technical capabilities and cultural alignment.
  • Experience managing pipelines for high-volume and hard-to-fill roles in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable using data and market insights to guide decision-making and improve recruiting outcomes.
  • Confident and genuine in representing company mission and culture to candidates.
  • Knowledge of current recruiting trends, compensation norms, and best practices in technical manufacturing hiring.
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies, hardware development, and manufacturing processes, and a genuine interest in the technical and scientific work of the teams you support.

Additional Requirements

Intermittently able to work longer hours and weekends to support critical needs. While we expect a lot of each other, we also offer a high degree of autonomy and work-life balance, including unlimited PTO and flexible working hours.

Compensation & Benefits

If hired for this full-time role, you will receive:

  • Cash compensation of $110,000 – $155,000.
  • Equity in the company. We're all owners and if we're successful, this equity should be far and away the most valuable component of your compensation.
  • A benefits package that helps you take care of yourself and your family, including:
    • Flexible paid time off
    • Health insurance (the company pays 100% of gold-level PPO plan for full-time employees, their partners, and dependents)
    • Dental insurance (the company pays 100% for full-time employees, their partners, and dependents)
    • Vision insurance (the company pays 100% for full-time employees, their partners, and dependents)
    • Disability insurance (the company pays 100% for a policy to provide long-term financial support if you become disabled)
    • Ability to contribute to tax-advantaged accounts, including 401(k), health FSA, and dependent care FSA
  • Relocation assistance to facilitate your move to Portland (if needed).
