Job description

Manufacturing Engineer - Shop Floor Support - Decatur, IL

Diversified Services Network, Inc. (DSN) is seeking a full-time Manufacturing Engineer - Shop Floor Support to join our team in Decatur, IL! We offer full benefits, PTO, 401k, and more! If you're looking to grow your technical career within an extremely reputable, stable Fortune 500 company - let's talk!

Position Overview

This position serves as the primary liaison between the shop floor assembly areas and the Engineering Team, responsible for communicating and resolving engineering issues identified during manufacturing, fabrication, and assembly processes. The role is accountable for driving successful resolution of these issues by collaborating closely with Operations, Manufacturing, and Quality teams. This is a hands-on, high-visibility role that offers direct exposure to large equipment manufacturing, with the opportunity to influence both product design and shop floor process improvements. This position is onsite from day one, with time split roughly evenly between an office environment and the manufacturing floor.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the first point of contact for engineering issues surfaced on the shop floor, primarily through Assembly Quality Events (AQE), Built In Quality (BIQ) issues and projects, and Continuous Improvement (CI) cards.
  • Respond to questions and issues raised directly by section managers, auditors, assemblers, and manufacturing, quality, and supplier quality engineers.
  • Collaborate with design/engineering teams via email, Teams chat, calls, and meetings to resolve engineering issues.
  • Participate in weekly AQE, BIQ, and warranty review meetings, as well as shop floor voice of customer (VOC) meetings.
  • Maintain and update machine-level prints (paint and lube, general arrangement prints, test instructions, etc.), bill of material (BOM) updates, and virtual print documentation.
  • Support prototype and pilot machine builds as part of New Product Introduction (NPI) efforts.
  • Create and secure authorization for deviations implemented to resolve design issues.
  • Occasionally perform pre-delivery audits (PDA) of finished assemblies, including marking issues found, working with operators to resolve them immediately, performing static torque checks, and documenting findings in a report with part numbers and model snapshots.
Team Structure & Work Environment

This role works cross-functionally with Operations, Manufacturing, Quality, and Engineering teams on an hourly-to-daily basis. Time is split approximately 50/50 between an office setting and the manufacturing floor, with the exact balance varying based on need. Core hours are 7:00 AM-3:30 PM with some flexibility. The manufacturing floor environment requires eye, hearing, hand, and foot PPE.

Requirements

Education & Experience
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a manufacturing or engineering discipline.
  • 0-2 years of overall experience.
  • Backgrounds as a Manufacturing Engineer are strongly preferred; experience as a Supplier Development Engineer (SDE) may also translate well. Backgrounds in quality engineering, chemical engineering, IT, or administrative roles are not a fit for this position, and candidates with a Master's degree would be considered overqualified for the scope of this role.
Top 3 Skills
  • 0-2 years of overall experience (project work and internships may be included).
  • At least 0-2 years of machine assembly/processing experience.
  • Basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), along with solid working knowledge of Word, Excel, Power BI, and PowerPoint.
Additional Technical Skills
  • Previous experience with machine design/process design or engineering coordination activities is a plus.
  • Familiarity with VisView and TeamCenter is a plus.
  • Exposure to PRWB, Tableau (for viewing AQEs), Decatur Web Apps, MES, AQE systems, the ETQ Reliance Portal (Deviations), CPI-BIQ, I-Cubed, CI processes, and Parts Discovery Tools is beneficial.
  • NPI and BIQ experience is a plus.
  • Prior experience in large-scale industrial equipment manufacturing or assembly operations is a strong differentiator.
Soft Skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage shifting priorities while maintaining strong interpersonal skills in a team environment.
  • Quick learner who is willing to work closely with operations and the shop floor on a daily basis.
  • Desired: a level-headed approach to problem solving, remaining calm and professional under pressure.
