Job Description
Position Summary
The Production Supervisor is responsible for leading hourly production employees to safely produce high-quality products while meeting production schedules, cost objectives, and customer expectations. This role provides frontline leadership by driving employee engagement, accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence across assigned shifts.
The Production Supervisor partners closely with Maintenance, Quality Assurance, Warehouse, Shipping, Planning, Human Resources, and Safety to ensure efficient plant operations while maintaining compliance with all food safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Responsibilities
Safety Leadership
  • Foster a safety-first culture and ensure compliance with all OSHA, company, and plant safety policies.
  • Conduct daily safety observations, toolbox talks, and shift meetings.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Promote employee participation in safety initiatives and continuous improvement.

Production Management
  • Supervise and coordinate daily production activities to achieve safety, quality, service, and cost objectives.
  • Execute production schedules while maximizing equipment efficiency and minimizing downtime.
  • Monitor production performance and adjust staffing or resources as necessary.
  • Ensure production documentation is completed accurately and timely.
  • Drive adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
  • Identify and eliminate waste through Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.

Employee Leadership
  • Lead, coach, and develop hourly production employees.
  • Build a culture of accountability, teamwork, and respect.
  • Conduct employee coaching, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions when appropriate.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and training of new employees.
  • Ensure employees receive ongoing cross-training to improve operational flexibility.
  • Promote employee engagement and recognize strong performance.

Quality & Food Safety
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety, HACCP, SQF, GMP, sanitation, and quality standards.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance to investigate product issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate production and quality records.
  • Ensure all products meet customer specifications before release.

Shipping & Warehouse Coordination
  • Coordinate closely with Warehouse and Shipping personnel to ensure finished goods are available for scheduled customer shipments.
  • Understand inventory flow from production through warehousing and distribution.
  • Monitor product availability to support on-time deliveries and customer service goals.
  • Assist with production scheduling based on shipping priorities, inventory levels, and customer demand.
  • Ensure finished products are properly identified, staged, and transferred according to warehouse procedures.
  • Support FIFO (First In, First Out) inventory practices and inventory accuracy.
  • Work collaboratively with Shipping to resolve loading issues, product shortages, and schedule changes while minimizing customer impact.
  • Understand warehouse management systems (WMS), ERP systems (such as M3), shipping documentation, bills of lading, and inventory transactions.

  • Monitor key performance indicators including:

  • Support compliance with labor agreements and company policies.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of manufacturing supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

  • Food manufacturing experience.
  • Experience in a union manufacturing environment.
