What is a management accountant?

A management accountant studies the financial data of an organization. Their job entails developing more effective financial strategies to aid in business planning and budget creation decisions. The main duties of this role involve examining data, preparing internal reports, resolving issues, and potentially handling taxes for the company. A management accountant needs a bachelor’s degree, typically in accounting or finance, but some employers prefer a master’s degree. Most start out in a staff accountant, tax accountant, or similar position before moving up into a management accountant role.

What does a management accountant do?

A management accountant is responsible for preparing financial information and analysis to help an organization make strategic decisions. They analyze costs, budgets, and performance metrics, and provide reports to management for planning and control. Unlike financial accountants, management accountants focus on internal processes and decision-making rather than external financial reporting. Their insights help businesses set budgets, optimize spending, and improve overall efficiency.

What skills does a management accountant need?

To thrive as a Management Accountant, you need strong analytical skills, financial reporting expertise, and a relevant accounting qualification such as CIMA, ACCA, or CPA. Proficiency in financial modeling, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, and spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel is typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills for interpreting data and advising management. These competencies enable accurate financial planning, informed decision-making, and support the overall financial health of the organization.

How does a management accountant typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Management accountants work closely with various departments such as operations, sales, and human resources to gather and analyze financial data that supports strategic decision-making. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to provide financial insights, create budgets, and forecast future performance. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as management accountants must translate complex financial information into actionable recommendations tailored for non-financial managers. This collaborative environment helps ensure organizational goals are met efficiently and effectively.

Financial Analysts primarily analyze financial data to support investment decisions and strategic planning. While both roles require strong financial skills and certifications, their work environments and objectives differ significantly.

What jobs can a management accountant do?

A management accountant can work in roles such as financial analyst, cost accountant, budget analyst, or financial controller. They analyze financial data, prepare reports, and support decision-making within organizations, often using tools like Excel and ERP systems. Certification like CMA can enhance career opportunities in these areas.

Job description

Management Accountant

Department: Finance - ANZ

Location: Virginia, QLD, AU, 4014

Job Function: Finance - ANZ

Employment Type:

Join The Arnott’s Group and be part of a business behind some of Australia’s most loved brands — from Tim Tams and Shapes to Scotch Fingers and Vita‑Weat.

We are looking for a Management Accountant to join our Virginia manufacturing site, where you’ll work at the intersection of Finance and Operations, turning data into insights that directly improve factory performance.

This is not a typical desk‑based finance role. You’ll be embedded in the business, partnering with Manufacturing teams to improve efficiency, reduce cost and drive better operational decisions.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Partner with Manufacturing (Core Focus)
    • Work closely with Manufacturing Managers and Team Leaders
    • Analyse production performance (yield, waste, efficiency)
    • Translate data into clear actions on the factory floor
  • Product Costing & Commercial Insight
    • Own product costing across the site (including NPD and value engineering)
    • Model the financial impact of production and process changes
  • Manage the monthly close process and reporting
  • Support forecasting, budgeting, and performance tracking
  • Provide cost centre reporting and analysis
  • Performance Improvement & Projects
    • Identify and quantify cost‑saving opportunities
    • Support capital projects and operational improvement initiatives
What Makes This Role Different
  • Fully embedded within operations — not a head office role
  • Direct exposure to how the factory actually runs day‑to‑day
  • Opportunity to influence performance in real time
  • A role where you’re expected to partner, challenge, and add value — not just report
The Ingredients for Success
  • Experience in management or commercial accounting, ideally within FMCG or manufacturing
  • Exposure to product costing or operational finance environments
  • Strong analytical capability and Excel skills
  • Ability to turn data into clear, practical insights
  • Confident communicator who can engage with non‑finance stakeholders

Note - CA/CPA is helpful, but not essential — we value commercial thinking and an operational mindset.

What to Expect
  • Early‑start environment aligned to production operations
  • Manufacturing setting (PPE / uniform requirements apply)

This role suits candidates who enjoy being close to the action, rather than working in a purely corporate environment.

Why Join Arnott’s?
  • Be part of an iconic Australian business with strong heritage and future ambition
  • Gain exposure to end‑to‑end manufacturing operations
  • Work in a team where your contribution has visible, tangible impact
  • Free parking
  • Hot food canteen
Our Culture:

We stand for high performance with integrity and find moments of pride and celebrate the wins gained from our collective effort. These are part of our culture and the cornerstones of The Arnott's way. When you join our team, you can expect to experience a real sense of belonging, be empowered with accountability, be recognised for your contribution, collaborate with great people.
