Job description

As a Research Scientist on Citrine's External Research Department, you will help advance the state of the art in materials informatics by applying data science and machine learning methods to solve challenging materials and chemical development problems. Working at the intersection of materials science, artificial intelligence, and industrial innovation, you will contribute to cutting-edge research programs that accelerate the discovery and development of new materials.
About Citrine Informatics
At Citrine, we're using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enable our customers to usher in the next generation of sustainable, high-performing materials and chemicals.
Our customers love what we do:
"We understand our own laboratory more than before. It's fun to work in this way."
We're the leader in AI for materials and chemicals. 10 of the top 20 chemical companies have trusted us as their AI provider and we have created more than $100 Million dollars in value for our customers to date. Our no-code SaaS platform empowers product developers to accelerate their work using chemically-aware data management and AI tools.
Citrine regularly wins awards for innovation and sustainability, earning spots on the CB Insights AI 100 list and the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in the US. Our customers include leading organizations such as LyondellBasell, Evonik, Grace, Avery Dennison, and Syensqo. We also collaborate with researchers from world-renowned institutions on cutting-edge research at the intersection of AI and the physical sciences.
Our team is exceptional, eager to grow and learn from each other. Team members work remotely throughout North America and Europe driven by our sustainability mission. We're growing quickly, and looking for the best to join us!
About the Role
Citrine is building the future of data and AI for the materials industry. As a Research Scientist, you will play a central role in that mission by leading and executing funded research projects in collaboration with government agencies, industrial partners, and academic institutions. Reporting to James Saal, Sr. Director of External Research Programs, you will work closely with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and software developers to deliver state-of-the-art materials informatics solutions. You will also help shape new research directions, contribute to scientific publications and proposals, and drive the application of advanced data science methods to real-world materials challenges.
Responsibilities
• Perform high-quality technical work in materials informatics, including data processing, machine learning model building, and designing and executing active learning workflows
• Rapidly adapt to new material domains and technical problems
• Manage technical aspects of funded programs
• Manage engagements with collaborators at universities, national labs, and other companies, including frequent and empathetic communication with collaborators
• Aid in the preparation of responses to requests for proposals (RFPs) and actively explore and develop opportunities for research funding
• Interface with Citrine's other core technical teams to facilitate knowledge transfer to and from the External Research Department
• Publish high-impact technical work in the form of peer-reviewed journal publications, case studies, and blog posts
• Present at technical conferences and workshops and travel to collaborator institutions for program-related meetings
Skills and Experience
• Ph.D. degree in materials science or chemistry, or equivalent experience
• Exceptional communication skills
• Enthusiasm to own projects end-to-end and a desire to drive progress through coordination and project management on research collaborations
• Demonstrated experience with machine learning, statistical modeling, optimization, and AI methods as applied to materials or chemistry
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously to scope out new projects, prioritize, manage time effectively, and execute to aggressive deadlines
• Comfortable operating in ambiguous environments, defining technical approaches from incomplete information, and driving projects forward with limited supervision
• Demonstrated programming skills (Python preferred)
• Experience contributing to successful government or industrial research proposals
• Demonstrated experience authoring peer-reviewed journal articles and communicating scientific results through publications, technical reports, and conference presentations.
U.S. Citizenship Requirement: Due to the nature of the work and applicable government contract requirements, applicants for this role must be U.S. citizens. This requirement is not based on company preference and applies only where required by law, regulation, executive order, or government contract.
Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience in responding to government RFPs
  • Experience in materials informatics as applied specifically to magnetic materials, catalysts, and/or metal additive manufacturing
  • Willingness to travel (<10%)
  • Studies have shown that women and underrepresented minorities are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification listed. Citrine Informatics is invested in creating a diverse, authentic, and inclusive team, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't perfectly align with what you read above, please consider applying anyway!
