Lifeguards must be able to see and correctly identify objects (with vision correction or appropriate sunglasses) at a distance of 125 feet.  Lifeguards must also be able to see in bright light.  (Lifeguards must provide their own equipment, i.e. sunglasses, for dealing with glare and bright light conditions.) Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Lifeguards must be able to remain at their post for extended periods of up to three hours without a break.  Lifeguards are expected to be attired appropriately for entering the water and performing rescue procedures.  Lifeguards are expected to enter the water as needed to perform maintenance and other functions and should be able to return to their initial post for an extended period, even in wet clothing.

Lifeguards must be able to use a ladder to access and descend from the lifeguard chair

Lifeguards must be able to use hand tools to clean the pool and pool area

Lifeguards must be able to remove an unconscious adult from the water (with assistance and using appropriate methods.)
