Job Description The City of Renton's Parks and Recreation department is recruiting for an experienced Parks Maintenance Manager dedicated to enhancing quality of life through exceptional stewardship of Renton's parks, trails, natural areas, and public spaces. The Parks Maintenance Manager provides leadership for a diverse maintenance division responsible for preserving, improving, and sustainably managing community assets that serve residents every day. This position offers the opportunity to shape service delivery standards, lead continuous improvement efforts, develop employees and future leaders, oversee significant operating and capital resources, and collaborate across departments and with community partners to support a growing and evolving city.
The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership in asset management, environmental stewardship, workforce development, safety and risk management, and capital project coordination while fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, inclusion, and exceptional public service. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Minimum 5 years of increasingly responsible experience maintaining landscaped areas, spraying chemical applications, designing, maintaining and repairing irrigation systems, bidding, contracting and project management. 2 years supervisory experience.
Valid Driver's License. Knowledge of irrigation systems design, turf diseases, turf maintenance, and horticulture. First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
Successful passing of a required background and driver's license check. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Manage the assigned maintenance programs, facilities, and service areas, ensuring consistent service delivery across the parks and trails system. Ensure effective delivery of operations through oversight of supervisors and performance outcomes.
Develop and oversee division-wide risk management, safety compliance, and regulatory programs. Develop and approve procurement strategies, equipment standards, and capital purchases in accordance with City policies. Develop a preventive maintenance program for equipment, control inventory and distribution of equipment, materials, tools and chemicals.
Interpret and explain policies and regulations; remain current regarding applicable laws, codes, rules and procedures. Establish division-wide maintenance standards, service levels, performance measures, and asset management strategies, and use data to evaluate effectiveness and guide continuous improvement. Represent the division in interdepartmental planning efforts (Capital Projects, Sustainability, Risk, Fleet, Finance) Prepare and manage requests for proposals and contracts for large park maintenance projects, oversee the Quality Assurance program, and inspect work in progress and completed work to ensure compliance with specifications and applicable laws, codes and regulations.
Prepare and maintain records and prepare reports of accomplished work and in progress, materials purchased and used, cost estimates, hazardous materials and safety records, and priorities of parks projects; review and approve receipts for purchased for merchandise; prepare and monitor assigned budgets. Ensure training programs, resources, and professional development opportunities are in place and consistently applied across workgroups. Lead workforce planning, succession planning, and hiring decisions, including staffing level analysis and oversight of consistent onboarding practices.
Ensure consistent supervisory practices across work units. Coordinate resources and facilities to support department-wide programs and operations including recreation and volunteer programs. Coordinate maintenance considerations during capital design and construction phases.
Oversee and monitor water conservation efforts implemented by the Parks Maintenance team. Establish standards and approve major systems designs for irrigation system installation, replacement, repair, and servicing. Lead division-wide safety meetings.
Coordinate with the Fleet Manager on the Fleet operations, maintenance, and replacement program. Provide opportunities for professional development to staff. Evaluate employee performance; conduct consistent staff and 1:1 check in meetings with direct reports.
Delegate, review and ensure timely completion of duties of assigned staff. Assist in the development and implementation of department goals that support the City's Mission and Business Plan. Train staff; set specific and measurable standards and goals.
Evaluate parks maintenance operations to improve service, productivity, and efficiency, and resolve work-related complaints and issues that cannot be addressed by staff. Ensure assigned staff regularly evaluate and recognize staff. Initiate hiring process and coordinate the onboarding and training of new employees.
Prepare budgets, monitor, and approve expenditures and capital purchases, (submit periodic budget updates and monitor assigned performance measures). Assist in the development and updating of City policies, ensure proper interpretation and administration of policies by staff. Create an environment of teamwork and respect.
Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by welcoming and meeting the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals. Use progressive discipline when appropriate with guidance from a Director/Administrator. Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance. Perform other duties as assigned. May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.
