Mainframe Computer Operator: Onsite | Washington, DC | Full Time | Support
About the role: SPN Solutions Inc. is seeking experienced Mainframe Computer Operators to support mission-critical production and data center operations for the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO). This role is part of a dedicated onsite team responsible for maintaining uninterrupted mainframe printing and processing services that directly support federal publishing and production operations.
This is a hands-on operational role in a controlled data center and print production environment. Candidates who succeed in this role are dependable, detail-oriented, comfortable working with enterprise-scale printers and mainframe job workflows, and able to perform consistently in a structured shift-based environment.
Place of performance: U.S. Government Publishing Office, NW, Washington, DC 20401 This position is 100 percent onsite. Remote or hybrid work is not available for this role. Shift schedules: [Day shift: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM ]
8-hour shift, Monday through Friday.
Rate of Pay: $26/hour
Key responsibilities
Mainframe print and output operations
  • Operate and support high-speed laser printers, impact printers, and bursters within a production mainframe environment.
  • Configure printers based on job instructions received from mainframe consoles and Production Control.
  • Load paper, toner, developer, and other consumables to ensure uninterrupted printing operations.
  • Monitor printer status during active production runs and respond promptly to operational needs.
  • Remove completed print jobs, organize output, and stage materials for distribution to customers.
  • Handle and unload boxes of paper and print materials as required for production workflows.
Production Control and job support:
  • Support Production Control activities by submitting, monitoring, and tracking batch jobs using JCL within TSO.
  • Track scheduled jobs and coordinate status updates with Production Control personnel.
  • Ensure proper sequencing and handling of print output aligned with job schedules.

Work area management
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized printer and output staging area.
  • Remove empty boxes, toner containers, and excess paper to maintain operational readiness.
  • Notify the recycling room when bins are full or require service.
Supervision and work environment
Work is performed onsite under the direction of the GPO Production Control Lead and Data Center Manager. Operators are expected to follow documented procedures, comply with facility rules, and coordinate closely with Government staff to ensure smooth daily operations.
This role requires comfort working in an industrial-style production environment with active equipment, standing and moving throughout the shift, and handling physical materials.
Performance expectations
  • Consistent, reliable support of mainframe and print operations during assigned shifts.
  • Accurate execution of print jobs and job support activities.
  • Timely and orderly handling of printed output.
  • Professional coordination with Production Control and other onsite personnel.
  • Adherence to Government standards, procedures, and safety requirements.
Required qualifications:
  • Experience operating high-speed laser printers, impact printers, or similar enterprise print equipment.
  • Prior experience in a production print room, data center operations, or enterprise operations environment.
  • Familiarity with mainframe operational support concepts, including job submission or tracking using JCL and TSO.
  • Ability to follow structured procedures and shift-based operational schedules.

Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks during active production periods.
  • Ability to work onsite in Washington, DC on a fixed shift schedule.
Physical requirements:
  • Ability to lift and move boxes of paper and print materials.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and work around active equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform hands-on operational tasks throughout the shift.
