What does a mail sorter do?

A mail sorter, also known as a mail handler, oversees the loading, unloading, and sorting of mail. As a mail sorter, your responsibilities and duties include manual processing of mail and operating mail sorting machines. You also sort bulk mail geographically and by postage type, creating batches that move on to the next destination in the sorting and delivery process. As a mail sorter, you will be required to lift large bins and work on your feet for extended periods of time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mail sorter, and why are they important?

These abilities ensure accurate and timely processing of mail, supporting smooth postal operations and customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by mail sorters, and how can they be managed effectively?

Mail Sorters often deal with high volumes of mail, repetitive tasks, and tight deadlines, which can make the work physically and mentally demanding. Staying organized, maintaining attention to detail, and using proper lifting techniques help manage these challenges. Many mail facilities provide ergonomic equipment and promote teamwork to ensure efficiency and reduce strain. Adapting to different sorting systems or technology updates is also common, so being proactive in learning and staying flexible is key to success in this role.

Joining UAF means becoming part of a supportive campus community while performing meaningful work on a consistent schedule. This role offers daily opportunities to interact with students, faculty, and staff while helping keep campus operations running smoothly.

A valid Alaska driver's license held for at least three years, with the ability to qualify as a University of Alaska authorized driver, is required, as driving on university business is an essential function of the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Position Details:

This is a full-time, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 76, based on education and experience.
