What is a long term internship?

A long term internship is a structured work experience program that typically lasts several months, often ranging from six months to a year. These internships allow students or recent graduates to gain in-depth, hands-on experience in their field of interest, build professional skills, and network within an organization. Long term internships may be part-time or full-time and can sometimes lead to full-time employment offers upon successful completion. They are valuable for building a strong resume and understanding workplace dynamics over an extended period.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Long Term Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Long Term Intern, you generally need a relevant educational background, a willingness to learn, and a basic understanding of industry-specific concepts. Familiarity with productivity tools like Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and any specialized software related to the field is often required. Strong communication, time management, and adaptability make interns stand out by enabling them to integrate quickly and contribute effectively to projects. These skills and qualities are important because they help interns maximize their learning experience, add value to the team, and increase their chances for future employment.

What are some typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for interns during a long-term internship?

During a long-term internship, interns are often given more comprehensive responsibilities compared to short-term placements. You may be involved in ongoing projects, participate in team meetings, and gradually take on tasks with increasing complexity. This extended duration allows you to develop deeper relationships with mentors, gain hands-on experience across multiple areas, and build a strong professional network. The role often provides ample opportunities for skill development, feedback, and sometimes even leads to full-time employment offers.

Job description

Description

This is an unpaid internship opportunity located in Massachusetts and is open to students based in Massachusetts. Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter to be considered for the position.

FamilyAid is a leading provider of solutions to family homelessness. Our mission is to empower parents and caregivers facing homelessness to secure and sustain housing and build solid foundations for their children's futures.

We prevent family homelessness whenever possible, reduce harm if homelessness can't be avoided by housing families as quickly as possible, mitigate trauma, especially for children, and provide wraparound supports that foster long-term stability.

We provide children and parents with a path to self-sufficiency via two-generation educational programs, housing search and placement support, and connections to vital resources they need to return to their own homes.

Our strategic vision and bold strategies to reduce two-generation homelessness successfully served 5,000 children and parents in Greater Boston last year.

Our supportive, collaborative, diverse workplace of more than 130 professionals is ideal for skilled, result-oriented professionals who are driven to help children and families thrive. FamilyAid has been recognized as a Massachusetts Top Workplace by The Boston Globe and by Charity Navigator as one of the nation's top organizations working to end homelessness.

Position Summary

This internship is embedded within FamilyAid's 2Gen Navigator team and provides project coordination and research support for the team's ongoing work. A  central focus of this role is supporting the team's work around Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs), a framework within the Aspen Ascend 2Gen model that emphasizes building families' long-term social networks, civic engagement, and access to enriching experiences that foster stability and intergenerational well-being. The intern will help develop internal materials and resources around PCEs, maintain program trackers, support communications, and participate in team meetings with 2Gen staff, management, and community partners.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • PCE Research & Materials Development: Research and develop internal materials to deepen the team's understanding and implementation of Permanent Connections and Experiences (PCEs); synthesize findings into practical tools and resources for 2Gen Navigator staff
  • Communications Support: Assist with drafting and revising internal and external communications, including team updates, partner correspondence, and program-facing materials
  • Tracker Maintenance: Maintain and update program trackers including budget tracking documents and program outcome data; ensure records are organized and current
  • Meeting Support: Attend and take detailed notes at 2Gen team meetings, open hours, management meetings, and community partner convenings; organize and distribute meeting summaries and action items
  • Project Coordination: Provide general coordination support for 2Gen initiatives as they arise, including scheduling, logistics, and materials preparation
  • Documentation: Maintain organized records of research, correspondence, and project work; contribute to internal reporting as needed
  • Team Participation: Attend in-person 2Gen team meetings held on Thursdays (approximately 2 hours)

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate educational program, ideally in social work (macro), public health, public policy, nonprofit management, or a related field
  • Highly desired:
  • Familiarity with two-generation approaches to family services and/or the Aspen Ascend 2Gen framework
  • Experience with program coordination, project management, or research synthesis
  • Fluency in another language (ideally Spanish or Haitian Creole)
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills, including strong writing skills
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Teams, and SharePoint
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Exhibits humility through the learning process and can accept feedback
  • Comfortable working primarily remotely with in-person participation on Thursdays
  • Flexibility and compassion are essential

Location and Work Conditions: This position is primarily remote. In-person participation on Thursdays for 2Gen team meetings is expected. FamilyAid's headquarters are at 3815 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02130

Work Schedule: Academic Year (September - April). Hours to be discussed with supervisor based on school requirements. Days and hours to be determined with flexibility to best meet program needs.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Please send a resume and a cover letter
