Job description

Shield AI is a venture-backed defense-tech company with the mission of protecting service members and civilians with intelligent systems. Its products include Hivemind autonomy software, V-BAT and X-BATย aircraft, and Aechelon simulation and synthetic reality technologies. With offices and facilities across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, Shield AI's technology actively supports operations worldwide. For more information, visitย www.shield.ai. Follow Shield AI onย LinkedIn,ย X,ย Instagram, andย YouTube.ย

The Autonomy Capabilities Team develops functionality to automate single- and multi-agent teams of platforms in pursuit of mission objectives and acts as a central discipline-aligned focal-point for encouraging consistent usage of technical approaches across business portfolios. ย This team operates at all levels of the command-and-control hierarchy (from advanced control laws, through motion planning, and up to advanced tactical behaviors and multi-agent coordination) and across a multitude of mission sets, platform types, and operational domains (e.g., air, sea, space). ย The team puts a strong emphasis on both fundamentals (e.g., aircraft kinematics/dynamics, trajectory design, optimization, information fusion, efficient algorithms, etc.) and software integration skillsets (e.g. structures, protocols, threading, interface management, etc.) to bring market-differentiating capabilities to customers that seamlessly operate within their integration contexts.ย

This position is perfect for an individual who enjoys solving complex problems across a diverse set of programs and integration contexts. An ideal candidate is expected to address operational system needs through a multitude of advanced methodologies that blend traditional control system approaches with advanced optimization. Developed solutions are expected to be integrated into real-world platforms with near-term program impacts and rewards and so balancing theory with practice and rigorous implementation is paramount.ย

About the Job:
Focusing on the maritime portfolio,ย you'llย beย creating autonomy capabilities forย USVs,ย UUVs, and cooperating UAVsย that enable them to perform advanced single- and multi-agent teamingย missionsย beyond conventional motion planning and waypoint following.ย ย The functionality you add will enable teams to use their diverse payloads and maneuvering characteristics toย search for,ย localize,ย andย pursueย targets while avoiding sensed threats and obstacles that pose a risk to platform safety.ย ย In many of these applications,ย you'llย have the opportunity to build capabilities from the ground up and be the first to integrate them onto new platforms.ย ย You'llย traditionally start with shorter-term R&D efforts or aligned customer programs but with the intent that successful efforts will grow into larger, multi-year programs.ย ย
As a Senior Engineer, you will develop and own major features from end-to-end, from design through operational deployment, and work closely with cross-functional teammates to achieve program goals.ย ย You'll also take an active role in mentoring more junior engineers and may directly interface in customers in limited capacities.ย ย
What You'll Do:
  • Robustย Motion Planningย -ย Automate unmanned surface vehicle (USV)ย and/or unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV)ย maneuvering throughย advanced motion planningย andย adherence to safety constraints includingย keep-out volumes, cooperative and uncooperative vehicles,ย andย depth limitationsย

  • Localization andย Trackingย -ย Employย cutting edgeย approaches forย passiveย and activeย localizationย byย definingย fusionย modalities, sensor requirements, andย observability-aware maneuvering capabilitiesย to maximizeย information gleaned from single- or multi-agent sensor networksย

  • Safe Maritime Operationsย -ย Keep vehicleย safetyย as a central focus within autonomous behavior architectures toย provide run-time assurance, ensureย COLREGSย adherence, andย build operator trust in advanced mission autonomyย

  • Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Collaborationย - Develop distributed optimization and task allocation approaches for heterogenous teamingย in orderย toย accomplishย missionย objectivesย by maximallyย utilizingย the diverse capabilities of agents to overall team advantageย

  • Rigorous Software Developmentย - Develop high-performance software modules that are well-tested, have clear interfaces and span-of-control, and are ready for mid-to-high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) insertionsย

  • Cross-Functional Collaborationย - Collaborate with cross-functional teams includingย perception, planning, simulation, hardware, andย operationalย test to ensure seamless integration of autonomy solutions on real-world platformsย

  • Deployment & Testย Supportย - Deploy autonomy capabilities to realย surfaceย vehicles, supportingย integration and demonstration events as well asย analysis ofย missionย logs to verify softwareย performanceย andย validateย system operational effectย

  • R&D and Road-mappingย - Contribute to autonomy roadmapsย by researching and prototyping new algorithms,ย identifyingย tactical capability gaps, and proposing novel solutions that advance Shield AI's missionย

  • Travel Requirementย - Members of this team typically travel aroundย 25%ย of the year (to different office locations, customer sites, and flight integration events).ย

Required Qualifications:
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and/or similar degree, or equivalent practical experienceย

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with aย Bachelor'sย degree; or 9 years and aย Master'sย degree; or 7 years with a PhD; or equivalent work experienceย

  • Proficiencyย in programming languages such as C++ and Pythonย

  • Significant background inย one or severalย robotic technologyย areasย related toย control systems,ย motion planning,ย optimization,ย tacticalย behaviors,ย and/orย distributedย decision-makingย

  • Significant experienceย with unmanned system technologies andย accompanyingย algorithms (ideally in theย maritimeย domainย specifically)ย

  • Experience with simulation tools and environments (e.g., AFSIM, NGTS, or similar) for testing and validationย

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot andย optimizeย system performanceย

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environmentย

  • Ability to obtain a SECRET clearanceย or higherย

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experienceย in multipleย domains (e.g., air, land, sea, space)ย

  • Experience across a breadth of methodologies from classical control through optimization and appliedย ML/RLย

  • Background in collaborative behaviorsย andย swarm roboticsย

  • Familiarity withย domain-relevantย DoD or government programsย

  • Hands-on experience supportingย integration events, customer demos, and/orย live exercisesย

  • Experience in applied research and developmentย

$160,000 - $240,000 a year
