Job description

POSITION DETAILS
The City University of New York (CUNY) seeks an experienced Stewardship Manager for the office of University Advancement. CUNY is the nation's leading urban public university serving more than 500,000 degree-seeking students. The University comprises 26 institutions: 11 senior colleges, 7 community colleges, William E. Macaulay Honors College, the CUNY Graduate Center, the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, the School of Labor and Urban Studies, the CUNY School of Law, the CUNY School of Professional Studies, and the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy. The office of University Advancement strives to develop new fundraising streams, forging relationships with corporate and philanthropic foundations, and private donors.
The Stewardship Manager is crucial in fostering and maintaining relationships with donors. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, the Stewardship Manager collaborates closely with University Advancement Staff and college leadership to identify and cultivate donor relationships. Additionally, the Manager partners with CUNY Colleges to develop strategies that encourage support for their programs, ensuring a comprehensive approach to donor engagement and fundraising.
In addition to the CUNY Title Overview information, other key duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Leads cultivation and stewardship activities to engage and strengthen relationships with current and prospective donors.
  • Develops strategic fundraising initiatives to attract and engage potential donors aligned with the University and CUNY's mission; establishes relationships with alumni, and philanthropic organizations to secure financial contributions.
  • Develops policies and procedures for evaluating and accepting gifts, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards; establishes clear processes for monitoring and reporting on use of gifts, guaranteeing transparency and accountability to donors.
  • Executes stewardship of temporarily restricted and endowed gifts; tracks the names and relevant information about the direct beneficiaries of endowed scholarships, awards, chairs, and capital gifts, send timely reports to donors.
  • Partners with Finance and Administration and other CUNY Central offices involved in the allocation of temporarily restricted funds and endowment income to assure that disbursements are made in accordance with gift agreements with donors.
  • Manages comprehensive donor recognition programs acknowledging contributions; includes donor appreciation events to celebrate and engage donors.
  • Provides colleges with comprehensive research reports and briefing materials on prospective donors, including individuals, corporations, and foundations, to support coordinated approaches for development opportunities.
  • Provides colleges with proposals for multi-College approaches to Donor relations, serves as liaison to College advancement staff, faculty, and staff in support of comprehensive campaigns and donor relations initiatives.
  • Manages donor information and builds prospect profiles within the University's database, ensuring accurate and accessible records; prepares briefings on prospective donors for Donor Relations purposes.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum:
Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required
Preferred:
  • Six years of experience in donor relations, or related experience, preferably within an educational institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and mastery of tools used for donor relations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, managerial, and organizational skills.
  • Detailed-oriented, ability to multitask; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in working as a member of a team of development and professionals.
  • Commitment to providing the highest level of support and assistance to the 26 Colleges of the City University of New York.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The salary range is $74,249 - $86,741, commensurate with credentials, education, and experience.
CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
