What are some common challenges faced by a Litigation Partner in balancing client expectations with case realities?

As a Litigation Partner, one of the most significant challenges is managing client expectations, especially regarding case timelines, outcomes, and costs. Clients often expect swift resolutions, but complex litigation can involve lengthy discovery, unpredictable court schedules, and evolving legal arguments. Partners must communicate transparently about risks and realistic outcomes while maintaining client trust and satisfaction. Balancing these aspects requires excellent communication skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to navigate both legal and interpersonal complexities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Litigation Partner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Litigation Partner, you need extensive experience in litigation, a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and a proven record of managing complex cases. Expertise with legal research databases (such as LexisNexis or Westlaw), case management software, and courtroom technology is often required. Strong leadership, business development acumen, negotiation skills, and the ability to mentor junior attorneys are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are vital for driving successful case outcomes, maintaining client relationships, and ensuring the firm's continued growth and reputation.

What are Litigation Partners?

Litigation Partners are senior attorneys in a law firm who specialize in representing clients in lawsuits and legal disputes. They typically lead litigation teams, develop case strategies, and manage relationships with clients. As partners, they also share in the ownership and profits of the firm, and often have responsibilities for business development and firm management. Litigation Partners usually have many years of experience and are recognized for their expertise in handling complex legal cases.

Job description

Salary range: $300K - $400K
About this role
We are looking for a Real Estate Litigation Partner with 8+ years of experience to join a well-established 45-attorney firm handling high-value commercial real estate disputes for sophisticated clients - including those who previously used AmLaw 100 firms like Gibson Dunn. This is a non-equity partner role with a clear, transparent path to equity (where partners earn seven figures) at a firm that values breadth, substance, and entrepreneurial drive.
What will you be doing?
  • Leading complex commercial real estate litigation matters involving acquisitions, financing, title disputes, and high-value property transactions (think $200M+ deals)
  • Working closely with the firm's real estate practice group to handle disputes that require deep knowledge of underlying real estate law
  • Managing cases from inception through resolution - including substantive motions, discovery, and trial
  • Building and developing client relationships with the goal of growing your own book of business over time
  • Collaborating in-office with partners and associates to mentor junior attorneys and contribute to firm culture

Key Requirements
  • Broad real estate litigation experience - not just one niche (must have touched acquisitions, financing, title issues, and commercial disputes)
  • Sophistication of matters handled - high-value commercial real estate disputes, not just residential or small transactions
  • Willing to work in-office 4 days per week at the firm's Los Angeles location
  • Active California bar membership with impeccable writing (typos or grammatical errors are fatal)
  • Substantive depth - must be able to answer detailed questions about your actual work product without deflecting
