Sentara is hiring an AI Governance and Literacy Intern!This internship is fully remote!Overview

The Intern position serves as an educational development opportunitywithin the AI Governance and AI Literacy teams at a large, integrated healthcare system.Under the guidance of experienced leaders in artificial intelligence and data literacy, the intern will support enterprise efforts to evaluate, govern, and educate on the responsible use of AI across clinical and operational domains for ~10 weeks.

Assists in completion of various projects and administrative duties while developing skills related to the assigned department and healthcare industry. Coordinates and assists with projects based on operational needs and/or Intern's area of interest. Communicates ongoing progress related to currently assigned tasks.This role provides exposure to the end-to-end AI governance lifecycle, including use case intake, evaluation of AI solutions, risk and compliance considerations, and development of AI education and training materials. The intern will collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, supporting clinicians, operational leaders, and academic partners in the responsible adoption of AI technologies.

Job Description

Duties will vary depending on the department, including:

  • Assists with day-to-day operations.
  • AI Governance Intake & Coordination:Supports intake and tracking of AI Governance Committee (AIGC) requests, ensuring proper documentation, organization, and communication of incoming use cases.
  • AI Use Case Research & Evaluation: Conducts structured research on AI tools, vendors, and emerging technologies to inform governance reviews. Assists in summarizing use cases, including potential benefits, risks, and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Governance Process Support: Assists in preparing materials for AI Governance Committee meetings, including summaries, analytics, and presentation content to support decision-making.
  • AI Literacy & Training Development: Contributes to the design and development of AI education and training materials, supporting enterprise efforts to increase AI literacy among clinicians, researchers, and operational teams.
  • Analytics & Reporting: Supports preparation of reports, dashboards, and summaries that highlight trends in AI use case submissions, approvals, and organizational impact.
  • Cross-Functional Engagement: Collaborates with stakeholders across clinical, research, and operational areas, including physicians, nurses, and academic partners, to support AI governance and education initiatives.
  • Project Coordination & Communication: Maintains strong communication regarding task progress, timelines, and deliverables. Supports coordination of multiple concurrent initiatives requiring high levels of organization and attention to detail.
  • Operational & Administrative Support: Assists with scheduling meetings, organizing governance documentation, and maintaining structured repositories for AI governance materials
  • Supports colleagues with project tasks and deliverables.
  • Helps with administrative duties, such as scheduling meetings or preparing reports.
  • Conducts research and analysis on topics relevant to the department.
  • Contributes to the development and execution of projects.
  • Prepares and organizes data for presentations and reports.
  • Participates in team meetings and brainstorming sessions.
Education
  • High School Grad or Equivalent (Required)
  • Must be currently pursuing and/or enrolled in a college or university at an undergraduate or graduate level or an active military service member seeking a SkillBridge internship.
Certification/Licensure
  • No specific certification or licensure requirements
Experience
  • Demonstrated interest in artificial intelligence, governance, healthcare innovation, or education
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts for diverse audiences
