The primary purpose of this position is to lead and implement the strategic vision and plan of the Binding P&C portfolio within Markel Wholesale & Specialty. This role will provide leadership, direction and support to underwriting team(s) and/or direct reports. It is responsible for product profitability, growth and retention of new and renewal business that is consistent with underwriting strategies.
Additionally, this role will work with Senior and Executive Management, and be accountable for reviewing and evaluating referrals for pricing, coverages, and loss detail in order to underwrite profitable business in a portfolio. The role will involve developing and maintaining productive relationships within assigned UW segments; product line management; Senior/Executive Management; Business Development and shared service functions.

What you'll be doing:

  • Support the product line leaders in the analysis of coverage and contract language based on industry accepted policy forms

  • Support product line leadership as a knowledge expert within thebindingspace on industry trends related tobindingproducts, assists the product line leaders as they make recommendations on product design, price and development efforts, and aidsbindingstrategy execution

  • Support product line by leading efforts to understand monthly trends within the portfolio

  • Manage the portfolio to achieve profit, revenue, loss ratio, and expense targets.

  • Ensure effective execution of best practices

  • Provide coaching and training for underwriting staff based on results of underwriting audit review

  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (Actuarial, Product Development, Claim, IT, Operations, Regulatory, etc.) to coordinate services to customers and ensure that superior products are being delivered to our internal and external customers

  • Property and/or Excess underwriting experience preferred

  • Manage and triage program business withinBindingproduct line

  • Participate in quarterly portfolio audits as required

  • Closely collaborate with our four regional underwriting teams to communicate and execute product line strategy

  • Represent thebindingproduct line, where required, to both internal and external customers

  • Travel Expectation 25-35%

What we're looking for:

  • 5-7 years of casualty underwriting experience

  • Insurance designations preferred but not required

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field from an accredited university/college

  • Strong interpersonal and management skills, the ability to communicate effectively, and excellent negotiation skills

  • Strong analytical skills and excellent problem solving/decision making abilities

Pay information:

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors.The national average salary range for the Director, Underwriting, is $162,800 - $223,800 with a 55% incentive target, Sr. Director, Underwriting is $188,800 - $259,000 with a 55% incentive target.
