Life Insurance Operations refer to the set of processes and activities involved in managing life insurance policies from application to claim settlement. This includes policy issuance, premium collection, underwriting, policy servicing, compliance, and claims processing. Professionals in this field ensure smooth and efficient administration to deliver a positive customer experience and maintain regulatory compliance. Life Insurance Operations teams work closely with underwriters, agents, and customers to facilitate the lifecycle of insurance products.

What are some common challenges faced in Life Insurance Operations, and how can I prepare to handle them?

To excel, it's important to develop strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and adaptability to changing regulations or company procedures. Familiarity with insurance software and a proactive approach to problem-solving will also help you navigate the fast-paced, collaborative environment typical of operations teams.

  • Document business requirements, operational workflows, and system functionality for group policy processes.

  • Assist in identifying process improvements and system efficiencies within group policy administration and enrollment operations.

  • Help troubleshoot and resolve operational or system-related issues affecting group policy processing, billing, and eligibility.

  • Support implementation of new group insurance products, benefit plans, and system features.

  • Communicate effectively between business users, employer group stakeholders, and technical teams to ensure successful system enhancements.

  • Participate in special projects and system initiatives with opportunities to grow into project coordination and project management roles.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in group life and health insurance policy administration or group insurance operations.

  • Strong knowledge of group insurance concepts including enrollment, eligibility, employer group structures, and group billing.

  • Experience working with insurance policy administration systems supporting group products.

  • Experience collaborating with software development teams or IT departments on system enhancements or testing.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage complex group policy and enrollment data accurately.

  • Ability to translate business needs into clear operational or system requirements.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Progress toward or completion of FLMI (Fellow, Life Management Institute) or other industry designations.

  • Experience participating in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for system releases or enhancements.

  • Exposure to group insurance system implementations or operational projects.
