Job description

For over 70 years, Mullen & Filippi has been providing comprehensive Workers' Compensation Defense legal services to California employers, on issues arising from workplace injuries and other employment-related concerns. We are an established and reputable law firm with fifteen office locations throughout the State of California.

We currently have an opening for an experienced Lien Specialist with a solid work ethic for our Southern California offices. This position has a requirement of 180 billing hours per month.
The Lien Specialist position performs a variety of legal duties for the firm and must bill at least 180 hours per month. This position is primarily responsible for the analysis, management and resolution of lien cases for the regional law office. The Lien Specialist will work closely with attorneys assigned to primary handling of the case to insure the efficient and cost-effective resolution of liens. The Lien Specialist may on occasion attend WCAB hearings if deemed appropriate by the handling attorney. It is expected that the Lien Specialist will carry out lien negotiations, manage a lien caseload and move lien claims to closure while providing the highest quality of service. Liens will be negotiated within appropriate financial authority, within parameters set by client litigation guidelines and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.
In addition to lien handling, the Lien Specialist will review records, summarize records for attorneys, respond to Petition for Costs, submit responses and Petitions to Board, and perform tasks and assignments as instructed by the handling attorney.
Effective communication skills are essential for the variety of audiences this position will interact with. The Hearing Representative will have strong reasoning, organizational and time management skills.
Traveling in person is required to attend Lien Trials and court appearances
Requirements

  • Three or more years of workers' compensation claim litigation experience, including In-depth knowledge of California Workers' Compensation laws.
  • Must maintain a current paralegal certificate and complete regular ongoing professional training as required. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Research case law, statutes, and regulations on a wide variety of topics including lien resolution and transform data researched into practical solutions for claims files.
  • Analyze and implement lien resolution plans at the file level.
  • Flexible and willing to challenge lien resolution processes and procedures to ensure the best possible outcomes.
  • Uses appropriate cost containment techniques including strategic vendor partnerships to reduce the overall cost of claims.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical and interpretive skills with the ability to calculate figures such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentage, etc.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to learn and become highly proficient using case management and other software applications.
  • Knowledge of EAMS searches, official medical fee schedule and WCAB rules and procedures.
