Library Temporary information

What is a library temporary?

Library Temporary positions are short-term roles within a library, often filled to cover staff absences, special projects, or seasonal increases in workload. These positions can include a variety of duties such as shelving books, assisting patrons, checking materials in and out, and helping with library programs. Temporary staff may work part-time or full-time, depending on the library's needs, and typically do not receive the same benefits as permanent employees. These roles are a great way to gain experience in a library setting and learn about library operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a library temporary?

To thrive as a Library Temporary, you typically need attention to detail, organizational skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with library cataloging systems, integrated library systems (ILS), and basic office software is often required. Strong customer service, adaptability, and communication skills help you assist patrons and work effectively with staff. These skills ensure smooth daily operations and a positive experience for library users.

What are common challenges faced by library temporary staff, and how can they be addressed?

Library Temporary staff often need to quickly adapt to new systems, workflows, and teams, which can be challenging given the short duration of their assignments. They may encounter a steep learning curve when familiarizing themselves with cataloging software, library policies, or customer service protocols. Proactively asking questions, seeking guidance from permanent staff, and taking advantage of orientation materials can help ease the transition. Staying organized and open to feedback enables temporary staff to contribute effectively and build valuable experience for future roles.

Job description

Part-Time Temporary Library Assistant II

The Fort Dodge Public Library is seeking a friendly, organized, and customer-focused individual to join our team as a Part-Time Temporary Library Assistant II. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, has a passion for public service, and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

This position will work approximately 20-25 hours per week and offers the potential to transition into regular employment status with benefits.

As the Part-Time Temporary Library Assistant II, you will serve as one of the library's primary points of contact with the public, offering support and assistance to patrons of all ages and backgrounds. You will be responsible for a variety of important tasks that contribute to the smooth daily operations of the library, including circulation, customer service, and program support. Whether you're helping a child find their next favorite book, guiding an adult through online resources, assisting with technology, or processing new materials, your work will directly support our mission to connect people with information, ideas, and opportunities for lifelong learning.

You will also have the opportunity to be cross-trained in multiple departments, gaining valuable experience across adult, teen, and children's services. This position requires a strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to provide inclusive, respectful service to a diverse community. If you are enthusiastic about libraries, enjoy learning new things, and want to make a difference in your community, we encourage you to apply.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received, with interviews scheduled on a rolling basis. The position may close earlier than the posted deadline if a suitable candidate is selected, so applicants are encouraged to submit their applications promptly.

Examples Of Duties
  • Provide exceptional customer service to a diverse community.
  • Perform circulation duties: checking materials in/out, issuing cards, processing holds, and managing overdue/lost items.
  • Assist patrons with library equipment, computers, the catalog, and basic technology troubleshooting.
  • Staff the Adult or Children's Services desks, providing basic reference, reader's advisory, and interlibrary loan support.
  • Support library programs and special projects.
  • Maintain confidentiality and enforce library policies professionally.
