Title: Library Assistant (WHS)
Position Summary: Wayland Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and nurturing Library Assistant to join our team. This role is ideal for an educator who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of our high school students. Our Library Assistant provides supervision, assistance, education and support to students visiting the Wayland High School Library and fosters a welcoming environment where all students feel a sense of community and belonging. The WHS Library is a place where students collaborate, study, research, and learn.
Duties and Responsibilities (Not limited to):
Support student learning
  • Promote a love for reading for all students
  • Help students find independent reading books, give suggestions, locate books on shelves
  • Assist students in locating and accessing materials and topics for research, reference, and assignments
  • Create Resource Lists of materials for classes
  • Enter daily statistics such as checkouts, student visits, classes etc
Supervise students, build relationships and serve as a positive role model
  • Enforce library policies.
  • Build positive relationships with students
  • Engage in responsible, positive, upbeat behavior that sets a good tone for the library.
Manage library collection
  • Use library software to check out, check in library books, materials and equipment.
  • Generate and send overdue notices and create circulation reports when necessary.
  • Sort and shelve books and other materials as they are returned, pull books for classes, etc.
  • Manage and update newspaper & magazine collection.
  • Process new materials as they come in including covering, labeling, stamping, & displaying new books.
  • Provide input in the evaluation, selection, purchase, and cataloging of material.
  • Inventory collection.
  • Mend books as needed.
Manage library communication
  • Create new, inviting, engaging diverse displays, centered around reading, research, community, events, etc.
  • Maintain library's social media sites including facebook, & instagram
  • Collaborate with faculty/staff in school on projects/displays/classes etc.
  • Design bulletin boards to promote reading and student engagement
  • Maintain conference room/library classroom schedule for students and staff
Miscellaneous
  • Enter requisitions and process purchase orders as needed for tech department
  • Issue work permits to students as needed
  • Assist librarian in maintaining physical appearance of library; pick up litter, straighten chairs, dust library shelves and clean windows as needed
  • Laminate materials for faculty
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Experience in a library environment desirable; previous successful work with students highly preferred.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population by providing superior service and commitment to Wayland's goals of diversity and inclusion.
  • Strong comfort level with technology, software, and the operation of standard office equipment including but not limited to computers - specifically macbooks, printers, scanners, copy machines, laminators, telephone, and other small office equipment.
  • Strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills including the ability to communicate via email & social media.
  • Ability to process and shelve books.
  • Ability to work in a busy, multi-tasking environment with willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to create thematic book displays & design bulletin boards.
  • Ability to interpret instructions both in written and oral form; ability to problem solve; typing, filing, data entry, and general organizational skills.
  • Education: High school diploma required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience working with elementary-aged children is highly preferred.
  • Cultural Competency: Experience with diverse populations and a strong commitment to Wayland's goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Professionalism: Strong communication skills and the personal characteristics necessary to serve as a positive role model for students.
Work Schedule and Compensation:
  • Hours: 30 hours/week
  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 8:35 a.m. - 3:10 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 8:35 a.m. - 2:25 p.m.
  • Salary: $25.63-$33.89 an hour
