Undergraduate Employment - Library Information Desk

Purpose of Position:

To provide excellent front-line customer service to a full range of library users.

Essential functions:

  • Provide excellent customer service by assisting faculty, staff, students, and community borrowers with informational and directional queries and checking in and out books and other library materials.
  • Direct customers to other departments and areas of the university when appropriate.
  • Handle routine requests for supplies and help with library printers, photocopiers, and other library technology equipment; troubleshoot equipment and report issues as needed.
  • Assists with the maintenance of general stacks, including shelving, shelf reading, and shifting of collection.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Requirements and Skills:

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
  • Must be available on weekends and in the evening.
  • Basic computer and typing skills.
  • Basic phone operations (answering, holding, and transferring).
  • Basic organizational skills.
  • Perform accurate and detailed work.
  • Ability to work as a team member toward the common goals of the library and university.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Basic tasks for opening/closing the library.
  • Ability to navigate the library website and booking software.
  • Ability to assist with monitoring building use and enforcing library policy.
  • Physical: Ability to move (push, pull, lift) medium to heavy weight (20-50 pounds) books, boxes, book trucks or similar items
  • Ability to handle material, which may contain dust, mold, or mildew.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Previous working experience in a library or customer service related position.

Students must be able to work between the following hour blocks.

Monday - Friday 7 am- 6 pm

Monday- Friday 6 pm- 1 am

Friday 5 pm- 9 pm

Saturday 9 am- 9 pm

Sunday 12 pm-12 am
