We are currently seeking a Project Assistant to provide research, retrieve copies of documents from government offices and courts and provide assistance to attorneys and paralegals as needed.

This one-year role is designed for aspiring law students eager to gain real-world experience in a fast-paced legal setting. You will work alongside attorneys, contribute to a variety of legal projects, and gain practical insight into the day-to-day practice of law. This position provides a strong foundation for individuals preparing for the next step in their legal careers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Edit and proofread legal documents, conduct legal research and prepare case summaries.
  • Draft legal correspondence, prepare IRS and other legal forms.
  • Review, index, and summarize FOIA productions from the IRS.
  • Retrieve pleadings and orders from courts as needed.
  • Search county records for old wills, probate cases, estate trusts, and research property information and valuation from various PVA offices.
  • Obtain copies of deeds, probate files and certified copies of wills, and handle the recording of deeds, releases, covenants, easements and mortgages with the County Clerk.
  • Maintain case pleadings folders, and create and maintain electronic and paper client files and indexes for legal business professionals in office. Perform routine filing and retrieve files as needed.
  • Input data in excel spreadsheets and reformat existing excel spreadsheets.
  • Assist with the preparation and processing of certified mailings.
  • Assist with the preparation of closing documents.
  • Maintain checklists for the Real Estate and Finance Service Teams.
  • Assist attorneys and legal practice assistants with billing and invoice tasks as requested.
  • Assist with document production tasks including compiling, bates labeling, redacting, and service of materials.
  • Assist in preparing for depositions, hearings, and trials.
  • Conduct internet research to support litigation and case preparation.
  • Update correspondence files, create and maintain pleading boards, prepare witness notebooks and binders, assist with indexing and assembling trial exhibits and binders, and organize records chronologically for hearings, trials and depositions.
  • Assist with filing legal briefs, including proofreading, cite checking, and preparation of exhibits.
  • Perform general office and administrative duties such as collating and assembling documents, accepting and delivering interoffice correspondence, photocopying, scanning, and faxing.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree and 1+ year of experience required.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when evaluating legal matters.
  • Ability to proofread typed material for contextual, grammatical, typographical, or spelling errors.
  • Interpersonal and professional skills necessary to communicate in person, by e-mail and telephone and follow instruction effectively from a diverse group of clients, attorneys, and staff.
  • This position exercises a moderate level of discretion and independent judgment and requires the ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with others in a team-oriented environment.
  • Work occasionally requires more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position and may require irregular hours.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer, photocopiers, scanners, etc.
  • Ability to travel locally and statewide, via private or public conveyance to assist attorney in attending to client needs on legal matters.
