What is a legal marketing director?

A Legal Marketing Director is a professional responsible for developing and implementing marketing and business development strategies for law firms or legal departments. They oversee branding, client relations, communications, and digital marketing efforts to enhance the firm's visibility and attract new clients. Legal Marketing Directors also analyze market trends, coordinate events, and collaborate with attorneys to promote legal services effectively. Their role is essential in helping law firms remain competitive in a crowded legal marketplace.

How does a legal marketing director typically collaborate with attorneys and firm leadership to develop marketing strategies?

A Legal Marketing Director works closely with attorneys, practice group leaders, and firm management to understand their goals, target clients, and unique value propositions. They facilitate strategy sessions, gather insights on legal trends, and align marketing initiatives with business development objectives. Regular meetings and open communication channels are essential to ensure that marketing campaigns, branding efforts, and client outreach programs reflect the firm's expertise and meet the expectations of stakeholders.

Marketing Director

Our client is seeking a strategic, results-driven Marketing Director to lead the firm's full-scope marketing and business development function. This is a high-impact, senior-level role for a legal marketing professional who thrives in a sophisticated, boutique environment and understands the nuance of marketing complex litigation services to corporate decision-makers, general counsel, and C-suite executives. The Marketing Director will be the firm's first dedicated marketing leadership hire, owning strategy and execution across digital presence, thought leadership, event strategy, client communications, and attorney business development support. This individual will collaborate closely with the firm's Co-Founding Partners and firm management to elevate the firm's brand nationally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Brand Strategy & Positioning
  • Digital Marketing & Web Presence
  • Thought Leadership & Content
  • Business Development Support
  • Events & Sponsorships
  • Marketing Operations

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of marketing experience preferably within an Am Law 200 firm, boutique litigation firm, or sophisticated professional services environment.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing marketing strategy for complex, high-value services targeting corporate and institutional clients.
  • Deep expertise in legal directory submissions (Chambers, Best Lawyers, Super Lawyers), pitch/RFP development, and attorney BD support.
  • Proficiency in digital marketing, SEO, website CMS management, and social media strategy.
  • Strong content creation capabilities with the ability to translate complex litigation concepts into compelling marketing narratives.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; a polished professional comfortable interacting with senior partners and firm leadership.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, email marketing platforms (e.g., Constant Contact, Mailchimp), and CRM tools.

Preferred:

  • Experience marketing commercial litigation, healthcare law, or white collar defense services.
  • Familiarity with the South Florida and national legal market landscape.
  • Experience working in a lean, self-directed environment without a large marketing team.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus given the firm's South Florida market presence.
  • Master's degree in Marketing, Business Administration, or JD preferred but not required.
  • Membership or involvement in Legal Marketing Association (LMA) or similar professional organizations.

Core Competencies:

  • Strategic Thinking
  • Client Focus
  • Credibility & Presence
  • Creative Execution
  • Data-Driven Mindset
  • Entrepreneurial Drive

Culture & Work Environment:

Our client is known for its team-oriented culture, long-tenured attorney relationships, and exceptional client service. The firm values tireless work ethic, sound judgment, and high-quality written and advocacy skills. The Marketing Director will work alongside partners and attorneys who are nationally recognized in their respective practice areas and will be expected to operate with the same level of professionalism and dedication. This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of the marketing function at a nationally respected, growth-oriented boutique firm at a pivotal moment in its trajectory.
